Sime scandal?

Sime Darby Engineering (SDE) use to make an average of ten percent on their gross profit, it was in fact more than 10%, but it’s hidden somewhere thru their accounting process for obvious reasons. For a turnover of RM400 million, they would easily paid more than RM40 million on taxes alone. That was the time of Dr. Samad Solbai and his team.

This day, SDE profit has plunged to a mere 3% out of a turnover of RM2 billion. SDE accountants are doing the direct opposite: how to show more profits, hide the losses and mitigate further losses. This is the time of Dato’ Shukri, Kadir Alias and a man whose name does not appear anywhere in SDE or even in the company that he represents.

The picture is less than rosy, especially in light of the financial crisis and the current price of oil. Aziz Dawi, from SDE, presented to Minister Of Finance (MOF) and a team of Petronas members, the status of SDE in the next few years after the Kumang Cluster (RM1.8 billion) and the Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) project is completed. He is worried of course for his new position and the faith of more than 1000 permanent staff of SDE. The irony of this is what while the meeting is important in charting SDE future. The actual faith of SDE is being decided somewhere outside Malaysia. In Qatar, where the Prime Minister is due to visit with some high level top notch of Sime Darby and especially SDE. The focus is on the Qatar Petroleum (QP) project. Awarded to SDE at a figure close to RM1 billion now it’s facing massive delay and losses to the tune of RM700 million. All earlier reports have missed the name of Qatar Petroleum (QP) against Maersk Oil Qatar (MAQ) as a result of which Sime Darby immediately denied the losses. In the clarification, Sime Darby is right in doing that, because the name of the project is not Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) but Qatar Petroleum (QP).

When the project was awarded about a year ago, the sense of euphoria and jubilation was without any end. All other local projects was sideline and take secondary stage. Further jubilation was when MOQ was awarded at a price tag of RM2 billion and the first payment was made to SDE. The cash flow was all positive and blue. Six (6) month Bonus was given to all SDE staff for last year 2008. Not until lately, the mention of QP and MOQ can only be done in secrecy and in very small circle. The QP project is already delayed contractually over a year. There will be losses and penalty but hope is that SDE fulfilled their contract and move on with other new project. No one have a clear clue of the losses and how to manage the project from suffering further losses. The current SDE team in Johor and in Qatar does not have the contractual expertise nor the engineering experience to manage the problem of QP. MOQ problem, is in the procurement with almost RM200 million loss, but yet again the fabrication works will be delayed and extend to offshore. Both Sime Darby and SDE is in state of denial of the problem they are facing. The problem is left to be managed by the General Manager, Mr. Zaki Osman, who frequent traveling up and down of Qatar from Johor Bahru is like his ordinary daily trip from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur. Still keeping his cool, although mentally exhausted when re reaches Johor Bahru, the strain and crack is beginning to shows. He is no superman. The problem is not entirely his doing or his project management team. The main cause of the problem is the relationship SDE have with a company called Real Offshore Installation Co. Sdn. Bhd (ROIC) and the deal marker of the Qatar project a man who will be identified as Mr.Sim.

Kadir Alias (SDE head of oil and gas division) met Mr. Sim when they were in Brook Dockyard in Kuching. Kadir was with Petronas at this time. Mr. Sim was assisting Brookes Dockyard based on commission and project success. He prepared all the bids submission and take a mark up from the project -3%-a small amount – and supply all the labor and sub contractors. The project was small and Petronas is a better client to manage. Mr. Sim was introduced to Dato’ Shukri as the man who put the Qatar deal together. That was the beginning of the “Simetyam Affairs’ – The then GM of SDE at that time was Ahmad Faiza, was politely terminated from his GM office and Mr. Zaki was brought in as General Manager. Not so long after come in Mr. Eric (also from Brookes Dockyard) as the Procurement Manager of SDE.

Mr. Sim operates and owned another outfit called Intraline – a full bumiputra company with Petronas license. His name does not appear in any of the statutory forms 24 or 29. The list of licenses that the company registered in Petronas is athick as a government annual gazette. The faceless but likeable personality move in and out of SDE, Qatar and of course Petronas smoothly, seamlessly and easily with confidents as if he owns them. Despite all the losses and delay suffered by SDE for both QP and MOQ, it is no doubt that the person who benefit the most is Mr. Sim thru commission as well as thru ROIC. This will be denied by SDE and Sime Darby but will be put in lightly by a forensic accountant of PNB.

Is SDE for SALE…? That was the plan, an exit strategy by Mr. Hisham Hamdan, the main man for IJN privatization and Labu Airport. An exec VP Corporate Planning, he is closely link with Kadir Alias. Unfortunately with dwindling profit margin and the financial crisis the exist strategy will have to wait a little longer. There is nowhere to hide the losses of both QP and MOQ other than thru getting new project from Petronas. This is where Kumang Cluster comes in as a “GIFT”. At RM 1.8 billion the “CostPlus” project is a bonus and timely rescue to cover the losses from QP and possibly MOQ. Industry sources agree that is possible with the help of well connected people within Petronas and of course Mr. Sim. At that price, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) have to fabricate 2 platforms for Petronas; Tangga Barat and Kinabalu, TWO for the price of ONE. MMHE smell foul but respected Petronas decisions. SDE further proof their strength and capability by completing 90% of the purchases within days of the signing of the contract. While they struggle in bitter regrets in Qatar the outshine in Kumang Cluster. Mr. Sim and his team organized the public relations to ensure that all is in order with Petronas in as far as SDE is concerned. Cost Plus project is the easiest way to make money – from suppliers to engineers – even where it is lump sum – the margin is in a good margin – Petronas must have been hook wind into this.

The magical illusion remains for as long as there is project – this is where Aziz Dawi in to show to Minister Of Finance (MOF) and Petronas that they need more projects. Especially like that of Kumang – with cost plus. They cannot afford to have a gap in the works. Partly because of the number of staff that carry with all about average pay slip but more importantly to ensure that the losses will not appears in the account of 2010. The place of Sime Darby as an institution of wealth lay between economics and politics. Bernard Esambert , former Rothschild banker, stated: “it is the junction of the state apparatus and the private sector that the possibility of making money are the greatest”. The holding company, Sime Darby, the subsidiary company Sime Darby Engineering had evolved an internal system of both behavior and social connection. There was a code of conduct, social conduct, in business affairs and web of connectedness, not merely on marriage but also on “honor among thief”.

Zamri from SDE is related to the Group Chief Executive Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zubir Mursyid. Kadir through Hisham Hamdan. Further down the line another character appears as Mr. Salam from Duplex who claim close ties with the current Prime Minister, PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Mr. Salam is now the new link between Mr. Sim, Kadir and Zamri. It is obvious to see that the next fall guy will be Mr. Zaki. Especially since QP and MOQ is handled by him, it is also not difficult to find a replacement at this point in time.

Tun Dr. Mahathir: Find a diplomatic solution for Palestine

SPEECH BY

TUN DR MAHATHIR BIN MOHAMAD

AT THE PALESTINE FORUM

AT CROWNE PLAZA MUTIARA, KUALA LUMPUR

FEBRUARY 5, 2009

———————–

1. Thank you for your presence at this forum on Palestine. I think it is important that we remind ourselves briefly of the background of this tragic country.

2. When after the Second World War, the Europeans had to give up their empires; they left behind time bombs, which regularly exploded, making the development of the ex-colonies fraught with danger and obstacles. Nearly all the newly independent states emerging from European colonisation have not been stable, nor been able to develop themselves, giving the impression that these ex-colonies are unable to manage independence. Many even think that they should remain as colonies.

3. Of the ex-colonies which have to manage the continuously exploding time bombs, none is worse than the mandated territory of Palestine.

4. Britain, which was given the mandate for Palestine had no right to carve the state in order to create the state of Israel. It is shameful that Britain should succumb to the terrorism of the Haganah and the Irgun and Zionist pressures and reneged on the conditions of the mandate. It was a totally irresponsible and dishonorable act unworthy of a country that talks so much about honour and integrity.

5. The Arab Palestinian not only lost much of their land but they were driven out of the portion given to the Jews. Their land was expropriated with no compensation and many were massacred at Deir Yassin, al-Dawayina, Eilaboun, Jish, Ramle and Laydda.

6. Since 1948, the Palestinians had to live as refugees in refugee camps under terrible conditions. Their children grew without proper schooling knowing only poverty and squalor.

7. One would have thought that the imperialists who had wronged the Palestinian Arabs would at least help them reclaim their rights in the state that is now called Israel. But instead we find Britain and the United States in particular giving military aid to the Israelis even when they openly seize more Palestinian land and set up Jewish settlements on land that is not apportioned to them.

8. There are some who blame the Palestinians for what they term as terrorism. I have no liking for irresponsible acts which result in the killing of people, innocent civilians whether Jews or Muslims. In fact I am against war i.e. the killing of people as a way of solving conflicts. But when the Arabs mounted a conventional war against Israel to regain Palestinian land, what did the British and the Americans, the people responsible for the outbreak of fighting between Jews and Muslims do? They provided Israel with military support so that the Arab states of Jordan, Syria and Egypt were defeated.

9. Unable to get any more help from the Arab nations, with no sympathy from other nations, the Palestinians finally had to fight an unevenly matched struggle against the overwhelmingly powerful armed might of Israel. Perhaps they should know that they could not win against Israel backed by American forces. But this is their land unlawfully occupied by the Israelis and even if they have to fight alone against their powerful oppressors, they have to do so. After abortive attempts to dislodge the Israelis, without the weapons to match those of the Israeli military, they had no choice but to resort to methods which must be physically very painful and terrifying to them. It is not something people would like to do – tying explosives to your body and blowing yourself up. But desperate people have to resort to desperate ways. And suicide bombings became their main weapon.

10. If they cannot do this what can they do when the Israelis expanded their territory, building roads on Palestinian land, which the Palestinians were barred from using, building high walls to break-up Palestinian families and their villages.

11. I went to Palestine and was shocked to find that entry into Palestine is controlled by Israelis armed with machine guns. Their checkpoints deliberately delayed my entry into Palestine by more than two hours so that I could not visit the village of Jenin where Israel had destroyed houses while their occupants were still inside, where the whole village was reduced to rubble by Israeli guns and bombs. I could not go to Jerusalem because the Israelis declared that it was unsafe, as if they cared for me. And everywhere I saw Israeli settlements guarded by armed militia while the Arabs were forced to build huts and live in them with their animals to prevent seizure of their land by Israelis for their settlements.

12. I was shocked that the Palestinians were not even allowed to call the remaining land that had formed the state of Palestine after the UN carved up a part of it to give to the Jews, the State of Palestine.

13. The Israelis insisted and the international community appeared to acquiesce that there is no State of Palestine, only a Palestinian Authority. Yet the United Nations when it agreed to create a state of Israel on Palestinian land referred to the partition as creating two separate states of Israel and Palestine. How come today there is no Palestine?

14. At any time Israeli tanks could enter Palestinian towns as if land under the control of what is called the Palestinian Authority is actually under Israeli rule. When I was there Israeli armored cars actually drove through Ramallah. I was told Israeli tanks had surrounded the building where Arafat was forced to seek shelter and Israel’s guns kept up a continuous bombardment of the buildings.

15. The Americans and the British insisted that the Palestinians hold elections to determine who should be the Palestinian Authority. The contest was between Fatah and Hamas. Hamas won hands down.

16. The least the British and the Americans could do was to accept the result of the elections. But these backers of Israel rejected the results of the election because they do not like Hamas.

17. If other countries reject the results of elections these so-called democrats would condemn them. But we now see the great proponents of democracy themselves rejecting the results of the democratic process.

18. But perhaps this is to be expected. America and Britain which had previously condemned detention without trial are now detaining people without trial and without even the benefit of the law. And the American Congress went so far as to make torture of prisoners legal.

19. In the meanwhile the Palestinians have been subjected to condemnation for defending as best they could but the Western Press played up the futile retaliation by the Palestinians as terrorism. That the Israelis attack, kill, destroy and arrest Palestinians thus terrifying them does not make them terrorists.

20. In a recent newspaper report in Malaysia, we are told that the Israelis blasted a car in which a terrorist was traveling. We know the Israelis are technologically advanced. But how could they know which car was carrying a Palestinian “terrorist”. Every time a car or a home is blasted by the Israelis we are told by our own papers that there were terrorists in the car or the house. Can we trust the Jewish controlled Western wire service and media to tell the truth?

21. What we do know for a fact is that schools, including a UN school and hospitals have been blasted by Israeli guns and the victims are plainly children and ordinary people. How come they fail to recognise that they were targeting children when their guns and tanks were so close?

22. Hamas may have fired rockets into Israel. But it was not without provocation. The Israelis had blockaded Gaza under the excuse that arms may be smuggled into the strip. Why is it so wrong for the Palestinians to get some pitiably inadequate weaponry when the US supplies guns, rockets, bombs, tanks and warplanes to the Israelis with which to blast Palestinian towns out of existence, with which to kill children?

23. The peculiar thinking of the Western backers of Israel was also demonstrated during the Serbian ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Herzegovina when the West did not allow the Bosnians to be supplied with weapons because they will cause more deaths in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It would seem that they wanted to see only the Bosnians killed. The Serbs were to be saved. Yet they talk of Serb brutalities. It would seem that Muslim lives were always expandable.

24. This is also the case with Palestine. The Palestinians must not be supplied with weapons so that they would be totally defenseless in the face of Israeli attacks, so that the Palestinians would be killed, so that the Israeli killers would be saved, so that the Israeli killers would be able to kill with impunity.

25. The same thinking also resulted in allowing Israel to have nuclear weapons while those against Israel are castigated and prevented from having similar weapons or any defensive capability. Sanctions are applied against them even when Israel is being supplied with more brutish weapons like cluster bombs and depleted uranium shells and bombs.

26. War is inhuman and war should be made a crime. People should stop killing people to settle their conflicts. But far worse than the killing in war is the murder of people who have been deliberately deprived of the means to defend themselves, to save their lives.

27. What kind of people are these great powers whose idea of fairness is to literally tie up the hands of the opponents so that their thugs can beat them to a pulp.

28. This is what we are seeing in Gaza. Yes the Gazans may have rockets but the scale of the so-called retaliation by Israel is beyond what can be considered as retaliation. It is nothing less than deliberate genocide worthy of primitive people. And yet the Israelis claim they are the most intelligent people with the greatest number of Nobel Laureates and scientific achievements. The greatness of a people cannot be measured by cerebral brilliance alone. Heartless people and bully are not great. They will go down in history as inhuman brutes. And those who support them must be considered equally brutish.

29. Some apologists for Israel claim that the Palestinians have rejected peace, have been deliberately provocative. But what is the peace that is offered the Palestinians?

30. It consists of being subservient to the Israelis and the Americans. It consists of rejecting their duly elected Government. It consists of giving up land that has been occupied by Israelis during peace as well as through one-sided wars. It means accepting Jewish settlements on Palestinian land, and denial of the Right of Return of the Arab refugees.

31. The peace that is offered by America and the West is the peace for a subservient Israeli colony, where the Palestinian may not even call their land Palestine, where Israeli forces have full liberty to do what they like in the land of the Palestinians.

32. Israeli brutality is unprecedented and shameless. The world knows that Israeli forces attack, kill and maim innocent children, women, the sick and the infirm. They deliberately starve their would be victims and deny them medical aid and fuel for power so as to weaken them before they attacked. And they attack with forces and weapons out of all proportions to the strength or military capability of their victims. And they do all these knowing that the mighty forces of the United States will be right behind them, ready to support their brutal acts.

33. The Americans and the Israelis are forever demanding that the Palestinians stop their terror attacks before there could be peace talks. Why should the Palestinians do that when the Israelis still occupy their land and enforce their rule on Palestinian land, keeping thousands of Palestinians as prisoners and in every way threaten the lives of the Palestinians?

34. If the Palestinians must cease their ineffective attempts to defend themselves, the Israelis must evacuate Palestinian land and allow the return of Palestinian refugees. Then only would it be right to demand that Palestinians do nothing to retaliate against Israeli aggression. Then only could peace negotiations begin.

35. The world must insist on these. The war will not stop otherwise. Today not even the mightiest military power can conquer countries. The authorities or the Governments of the countries concerned may surrender but the people will not. They will continue to fight by whatever means possible until their country is fully liberated.

36. We saw this in Vietnam, in Somalia, in Afghanistan, in Iraq. The only war the US won was in tiny Grenada. Shock and awe will get the military powers nowhere. When people are determined to get back their land they will continue to fight until they achieve their honorable objective.

37. The big powers must realise this. Your weapons of mass destruction your sophistication in inventing new killing machines will avail you of nothing. A hundred years ago you may conquer and colonise. But not any more. You cannot crush the spirit of the people and the love of their land. They will fight if it takes a thousand years.

38. If there is to be peace in this world, if it is going to be freed from acts of terror by irregulars and regulars, stop thinking that force and the killing of people will solve the conflicts between people.

39. If the world is to see peace in Palestine and the Middle-East and indeed the whole world, take no sides in the Palestinian conflict. Only justice based on historical facts will put an end to the Palestinian issue peacefully. Until then the world will continue to see endless violence and war in the Middle-East and Palestine.

40. The onus is on the big powers which created Israel, the time bomb par excellence, which will not stop exploding in the face of the world until justice is done.

41. This is not a religious war. The Jews have been living in Muslim land for centuries. In fact they seek refuge in Muslim land from the oppressions and pogroms of the Europeans. But if the Jews reward their Arab hosts by seizing their land then they and their European invaders will have to pay the price.

42. The tragedy of Gaza will be repeated again and again. But those who think that the Palestinian will be cowed into submission are mistaken. For every Gazan killed many will replace them.

43. War will solve nothing for the militarists. Only justice through peaceful negotiation will.

Should BN win the grounds or battles, before the war?

The past twelve days, the nation saw an ultra high adrenaline political ‘roller coaster’ ride in Perak; phenomenon unfamiliar in a Semenanjung mainstream politics. So much uncertainties and surprises sprung, were imposed upon us, some with razor-thin and nail-biting hour-by-hour game of the most updated political situations, stance and announcements. That got many political leaders, running around like wet and headless hens.

The latest developments as per yesterday evening showed Barisan Nasional (BN) managed to get the majority support in the Perak State Assembly, with the return of Bota Assemblyman Nasarudin back into UMNO and defection of three other Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in support of BN. Technically, BN is able to form the new Perak State Government and  PR, under the stewardship of PAS’s DAP-puppet MB Dato’ Seri Mohd. Nizar Jamaluddin and DAP infested Exco would have to step aside.

The Star has the story:

Thursday February 5, 2009

Barisan now has the majority in Perak State Assembly

Reports by SA’ODAH ELIAS, ZULKIFLI ABDUL RAHMAN, MAZWIN NIK ANIS, CHRISTINA KOH, CLARA CHOOI, CHAN LI LEEN, DHARMENDER SINGH, NG CHENG YEE, LEE YUK PENG, IAN MCINTYRE, A. LETCHUMANAN, IVAN LOH, FLORENCE A. SAMY and SYED AZHAR.

PUTRAJAYA: In a dramatic turn of events, a new government looks set to be formed in Perak, with Barisan Nasional now commanding the majority following the return of Bota state assemblyman Datuk Nasarudin Hashim to Umno and the support of three Independent wakil rakyat.

With the return of Nasarudin, Barisan now has 28 seats and the support of three “friendly Independents” – Behrang assemblyman Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi, Changkat Jering assemblyman Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu and Jelapang assemblyman Hee Yit Foong.

Pakatan Rakyat is left with 28 seats in the 59-seat Perak State Assembly but the seat held by the Speaker will have to be discounted as the Speaker cannot cast a vote in the assembly.

Over to you: Najib announcing the fall of the Perak state government with the four assemblymen Datuk Nasarudin Hashim (Bota, on Najib’s left), Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang), Mohd Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) and Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang, in white) at the press conference in Putrajaya. On Najib’s right is Minister in the PM’s Department and Bagan Datoh MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he would be seeking an audience with the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah to officially inform the Ruler that Barisan now has sufficient support to form the state government.

Perak Barisan Nasional secretary Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin confirmed that Najib would meet Sultan Azlan Shah today.

Earlier yesterday, during a press conference at his office, Najib, who is also Perak Barisan and Umno liaison committee chairman, said that Jamaluddin, Mohd Osman and Hee had informed him on Tuesday that they had sent a letter to the Sultan stating they had quit their respective parties.

“Today (yesterday) Bota assemblyman (Nasarudin) informed me that he would like to return to Umno.

“The wakil rakyat, including the three Independent assemblymen, have given me the mandate to come up with a list of names for the Mentri Besar’s post and have pledged to support the new Mentri Besar chosen by Barisan with the consent of the Sultan,” he said.

Najib said the four assemblymen had informed Perak State Assembly Speaker V. Sivakumar, PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng that they were no longer members of the respective parties.

“Hence, as stated under Article 16 of the Perak Constitution, if the Mentri Besar has lost the confidence or the majority, he will have to resign together with his exco members,” Najib said.

Nasarudin, Jamaluddin, Mohd Osman and Hee were present at the press conference. Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Perak Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and a majority of Barisan assemblymen from the state, including Chenderiang assemblyman Dr Mah Hang Soon were also in attendance.

Najib said there would be due process to follow before Barisan could form the Perak government.

He also denied allegations that Barisan had “bought” the wakil rakyat concerned, adding that the three would remain as Independents but “friendly Independents who will support Barisan”.

****************************

Over the weekend, the two PKR ADUN of Behrang and Changkat Jering resigned from their party and were bent towards joining UMNO. As a pre-emptive strike measure, the State Assembly Speaker Sivakumar instantaneously accepted their pre-signed but undated resignation letters as a political defense to gamble on the Pakatan Rakyat razor thin majority in the recently acquired state.  A letter was sent to notify the Election Commission (EC) of these vacancies, to pave way for fresh by-elections.

EC met, deliberated and ruled out that the submitted resignations were not acceptable and the two YBs shall remain as where they were. The PR Perak State Government now is sitting right in a middle of a precarious fence.

In light of this political tension and confusion, PR saw the very strong possibility of them losing the Perak State Government. Unprecedentedly, last afternoon MB Nizar  announced the untimely dissolution of the Perak State Assembly before getting the consent of HRH Paduka Seri Sultan of Perak, in an effort to scuttle the boat and betting on getting fresh mandate with a state elections. This is something the DAP would prefer as oppose to PKR, which is thought to be more incline into the ‘cross-over-katak’ game.

MB Nizar failed and the validity of his 100pm announcement is questionable. At the same moment, DPM Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak was confident in having the support of the four ADUNS and proudly announced BN ‘hostile take over’ of the Perak State Government. Now, the most popular game everyone is playing is to guess who from BN would be the new MB, upon getting the consent of HRH Paduka Seri Sultan.

PR is not taking these developments easy. They are organizing a massive rally in Ipoh sometime today. A legal tussle to challenge  the validity of the pre-signed and undated ‘resignation letters’ and/or any new proclamation would be expected. The plot thickens and gets more complicated. Of course, the beneficiary of all of these mind boggling games would be the rakyat.

The last time Malaysian political scene saw this, was in Sabah. The latest was 93-94, when USNO (now dissolved and assimilated into UMNO) tried to wrestle the State Government from PBS. UMNO did not manage to properly install their leadership at the state helm, not until the 1999 state elections.

The two PKR ADUN who defected, who were former Excos were charged and due to appear in court for corrupt practices. Even when BN safely nestled themselves as the new State Government managed to regain grounds then, they would have to go through the electoral process anyway if and when Jamaluddin and Mohd. Osman were found guilty. The timing of the gamble might take some time, which include the appeal process. From the looks of it, the BN would just go along managing the state and trying to undo what PR did, hoping to regain the rakyat’s confidence of them, something which was yanked from under their feet on 8 March last year.

The Thirteen Million Ringgit question now is would BN want to win at getting control and run the Perak State Government, in this game? Would not in had been better if the State Assembly was dissolved and power is earned from a fresh mandate, instead of ‘crossing over’ game?

Since 12th General Elections 8 March 2008, BN has proven themselves to be very bad in the polling game. The rakyat preferred to voice their dissent via the ballot box, as many at grassroot level felt BN leaders continuously turn deaf ears and blind eyes to their complaints and grievances, especially the wake of very efficient communication and information era. Hence, BN ‘lost’ the confidence, then support of the rakyat, which saw 5 + 1 states were wrestled unprecedentedly in over 53 years of Malaysian democratic history.

BN should buck up their internal mess, get their houses clean, polish their act and improve of intra-party relations, understanding and co-operation first. These the very issues why 45% of Malaysian voters threw their support for Pakatan Rakyat on the 8 March 2008, even many did with the clear conscience that the DAP-PAS-PKR unholy, disorganized and unstructured ‘marriage of convenience’ would probably not get anywhere, especially to bring about progress and change which the rakyat idealistically so desire.

Then again, the issue of the two ex-PKR ADUNs Behrang and Changkat Jering, who are now plagued with corruption charges will be a new variable that will add to the existing complications faced by BN. UMNO should be looking into getting right leaders, especially at this point of time. This is something Fifth UMNO President Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad strongly put forth, at a juncture where UMNO leaders’ integrity and credibilty has been doubted and challenged.

The Star has the story:

It will tarnish Umno’s image, says Mahathir

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s action of accepting those accused of corruption will tarnish the party’s image, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

However, the two assemblymen – Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu (Changkat Jering) – have not announced that they would join Umno, only that they were leaving PKR to become Independent members of the Perak State Assembly.

Dr Mahathir, in the posting on his blog, asked if Umno was so desperate that the party could not wait for the court to decide on the charges against the two before accepting them.

Jamaluddin and Mohd Osman had pleaded not guilty last August to corruption charges involving the development of a piece of land.

*******************************

BN should do the right thing. Winning the grounds today , more over from ‘coup d’etat‘ or ‘hostile take over’, will not ensure the battle is won, let alone the war.  Fields should be taken, with the ‘colours’ intact. As the saying goes, “politics is about perception”. How would BN be remembered, when future Malaysians, who will be expected to be more sophisticated and analytical, discuss about how the field was taken in ungentlemanly tactics deployed and games played?

Of course, the argument will always linger around on how BN’s opponents like PKR and PAS, especially with the stewardship of partyless Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim incorrigible ability to lie and make promises that they don’t intend to keep, which complicates the political scenario by ‘not playing the game by the book’. BN should on a web of strategies of winning the rakyat’s heart and confidence and making sure Anwar style of lies as a virtue to distrust his leadership. Had BN did not shoot themselves in the foot ever so often, former abuse of power convict Anwar would not able to do his ‘pasar malam style selling’ destructive of politics.

In essence, all of these changes must start with paradigm shifts that BN Leadership must and most importantly, willing to do. The root of the problems must be addressed, no matter how complex they can be. Had all of the issues clearly sent by the rakyat to BN Leadership been addressed or the very least been seen to be worked on, then they should be on the way to be fully confident of  ‘taking on the field’ in a open warfare; fresh elections. Politics should be a mixture of rugby and chess; game of the wit and strategy meets barbaric game played by gentlemen.

To hold grounds and sustain battles is important to ensure that the war in won. How far will BN go, if grounds are won in these manners. Winning and the ability to hold the grounds would rely a lot on the physical and economic situation and progression. Regardless, to move on and progress, confidence of the rakyat is paramount.  Not only for a mandate to get laws passed and budgets approved, but as the 17th most important trading nation to progress, especially in the dawn of a global economic recession.

The strategy of winning the war with political stability is the ticket of Malaysia to survive.

• The combat of the resistance confronting colonialism cannot be divided from the combat by revolutionaries and free men and women confronting globalized capitalism, imperialism, militarization and the elimination of the social benefits that were established by more than two hundred years of determined working-class struggles.
• The people have a sovereign right to their natural resources. The right to food, health and education must take priority over any commercial consideration;
• Each culture and all knowledge should contribute to increasing the common wealth of humanity on the basis of respecting Nature, giving priority to human needs and the democratic management of society;
• The right to democratic governance must be carried out not only at the political level but also at the economic level and is the concern of both men and women;
• The right to cultural differences and freedom of worship while rejecting any cultural and racial bias must be guaranteed.

This is to be done during the process of establishing a regional cooperation in the Mediterranean (excluding Israel while awaiting a solution of the colonial problem in Palestine), in opposition to Sarkozy’s neoliberal program.
4. To fight against overexploitation by industrial fishing and to support small-scale fishing by guaranteeing a social subsidy.
5. To preserve the common inheritance of humanity and the resources fundamental to life by developing organic agriculture and by using renewable energy sources.
