BN wins Galas & Batu Sapi: A vote for progress Vs extremism

Unconfirmed reports via sms stated BN’s Abdul Aziz Yusof and Linda Tsen won at N45 Galas and P185 Batu Sapi by-elections.

4/11 Unofficial result: Barisan Nasional has won both the Batu Sapi and Galas by-elections/STAR

BN won a majority of 5,257 votes in Batu Sapi where else in Galas, Aziz took 1,069 votes majority. These results have yet to be confirmed. Needless today, these unconfirmed reports demonstrated improvement in the rakyat’s confidence.

A vote for Barisan Nasional shows that the rakyat is voting for progress. The extremism of Pakatan Rakyat’s within wet dreams and lies has lost its ability to capture the imagination of the voters.

It is a true demonstration of PR’s defeat. BN relatively unknown bantered SAPP Yong Teck Lee in his own turf, where the Chinese holds substantial votes in the West Sandakan constituency. The PKR machinery, backed by Chinese Chauvinist DAP worked very hard aorund Sandakan to deny BN the win again.

It is also seen in Gua Musang. Lim Guan Eng and Anwar “Mat King Leather” Ibrahim shared a stage with PAS Spiritual Leader Nik Aziz. Nik Aziz, failing to bring HRH Sultan Muhammad V to distribute land titles (which is a major issue for the Non Malay and Orang Asli voters around Gua Musang and Hulu Kelantan area) resorted to ‘give’ RM 250.00 ‘honorarium’ for voters instead.

Obviously, these calculated desperate attempts failed. A vote for BN is about confidence to PM Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak’s leadership is improving. Especially when his new agenda for Malaysia. It is a vote for ’1 Malaysia’.

Congratulations, BN. Also congratulations to BN Deputy Chairman DPM YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd. Yassin, BN Co-ordinating Director of Operations for Batu Sapi YAB Dato’ Seri Musa Aman and for Galas YBM Tengku Tan Sri Razaleigh Hamzah.

*Updated 855pm

BN’s Gua Musang UMNO Secretary Abdul Aziz Yusof won with a majority of 1,190 votes by polling 5,324 votes defeating PAS’s Gua Musang Acting Head Dr Zukefli Mohamad’s 4,134 votes. In 2008, BN lost to PAs by 646 votes majority.

  1. I’m sorry. I puked upon seeing the video.

  2. PKR did not blog hard enough. They should have also created a Facebook page and Twitter to reach out to these rural folk using new media.

Ah Sorry! I forgot that these folk don’t even have running water and are too poor to be able to afford yuppie toys like iPad, BlackBerry, etc.

C’mon, hurry up MCMC and give them netbooks and broadband access so that the PKR can win next time round.

    • You’re assuming that with better broadband penetration and connection, the votes will automatically shift towards PR’s side. The same stupid assumption underlies PR’s insistence that with “free” media (free to slander, that is), PR can take on Putrajaya anytime. Well my dear dumb ass friend, there’s a fine line between what is information and what is the truth.

One could argue that with better Internet access, those rural folks will be better exposed to the mismanagement of the PR states, their incompetent and corrupt leaders, and the in-fighting in the recent PKR polls. They would be able to see the chameleonic side of Anwar, the racist agenda of Chin-Peng-hugging-DAP, and rhetorical Islamic stands of PIS. The point is, better Internet access does not equal to more votes. One should always use one’s own kepala hotak (which u obviously didn’t, based on your stupid line of reasoning) to discern the slanders from the facts.

      • Sir,

Thanks for your comments. I love them.

I was only playing the Devil’s advocate and being sarcastic, not to Big Dog in particular but towards the myth of one-sided “internet empowerment” in general.

I have been writing about information and communications technology for over 16 years and have been repeatedly exposed to the kind of crap, especially from the new media “gurus” and “consultants” who profess that new media would tip the scales against the BN.

This by the way is just the result of an illusion, whereby the BN government under Tun Dr. Mahathir allowed freedom of expression on the Internet, allowing room for the mushrooming of free expression, which especially those with alternative opinions and agendas initially and I repeat INITIALLY – took advantage of with gusto, giving them a false impression of empowerment and effectiveness.

Then when the BN lost its two-thirds majority by a whisker on 8 Mar, 2008, the new media types went to town claiming that new media had enabled an electoral “defeat” of the BN in a “tsunami.”

What they forget is that governments in many western liberal democracies can rule even while in minority, so it’s not a “defeat” but only a small setback.

However, the BN too seems to be behaving as if it had suffered a “defeat.”

There also is no co-relation between the electoral fortunes of the BN, which has risen and fallen slightly at each election prior and the drop in 2008 was in tune of a drop part of the cycle after a rise in 2004 and a drop in 1999 and a rise in 1994 (or was it 1995?).

However, throughout that whole period, the number of internet subscriptions has been rising steadily, according to MCMC figures, so there is no correlation between Internet penetration and the electoral fortunes of the BN vs the opposition.

In short, the electoral fortunes of the BN are not inversely proportional to Internet penetration. Otherwise, would the BN government would not be driving Internet penetration so hard.

Also, if the internet was so “empowering” as many may claim, the U.S. military would have been withdrawn from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc a long time ago but instead Obama just wound down in Iraq and escalated in Afghanistan, and is now threatening war on Iran and Pakistan.

Also, with the exposure of the 9-11 truth, the former president GW Bush, his administration and the Neo-Conservatives would be under trial but nada.

So instead of listening to the trendy rhetoric, if one just puts on his thinking cap (as you rightly say) and looks around at the real world, one sees the reality that all this rhetoric about political empowerment via the internet as just an illusion, a myth.

At the end of the day, the internet is neutral and provides a level playing field for all, just as a free old media has provided a playing field for differing opinion in the liberal western countries but even then, that has not had a major influence on electoral outcomes there.

At the end of the day, I firmly believe, that it is the sense of economic wellbeing which has the major influence on electoral outcomes or even major domestic political ones.

The French and Russian revolutions came about during periods of great economic stress among the people.

The Nazi’s came to power through elections during a period of great economic stress in Weimar Germany.

The U.S. backed Marcos regime fell during a period of great economic stress in the Philippines.

President Soeharto fell in Indonesia following economic stress due to his IMF-dictated removal of subsidies on essentials.

The PAP government remains re-elected back to power in Singapore because it has continued to provide a sense of economic wellbeing especially to the working class and lower income groups, so the PAP can ignore the feelings of the more western-influenced middle class there, which tends to support the opposition there.

Thaksin in Thailand also followed the same strategy and remains popular especially among the rural poor and the urban lower income group.

Even the American war of independence, although it was a war of national liberation, initially came about due to the burden of taxes imposed on the colonial Americans by their British colonial master.

That too has been the BN strategy all along, though also with a bias towards a particular ethnic group which constitutes the majority.

While I’m pro-opposition, I am rather disappointed with many of the current crop who focus on highlighting single issues and middle-class concerns, such as human rights, press freedom, transparency, etc, unlike the older opposition which addressed the economic concerns of the workers, the petty-traders, etc.

It appears that certain western-backed NGOs, including Sorosite-backed NGOS have gotten into the current opposition’s heads.

While, I’ll still back the opposition, I won’t stop from ridiculing their nonsensical faith in this ‘Internet empowerment.”

Well, thankfully, the Parti Sosialis Malaysia has not fallen for this crap and continues faithfully with “old school” approaches, which are still effective.

BTW. I once had a blog where I called myself “HiTekHeretik” after Dr. Clifford Stoll’s book High Tech Heretic. he also wrote Silicon Snake Oil before that and was flamed by the Internet wallahs who could not bear the truth he exposed about the cozy myths which they held.

Perhaps I should revive that blog. Ha ha!

Meanwhile, check out these websites/blogs which have turned against the social media nonsense.

        http://alexblom.com

        http://socialmediabust.com

Perhaps somebody in Malaysia should invite them to speak at conferences and seminars but so far none have.

        Enjoy!

      • “Internet empowerment” as you called it, is a double edge sword – and the benefit should go to the wielder, or it supposed to.

Whereas it does not tipping the scale in grand manner to either party, it does giving people the information that was otherwise concealed or hidden from the public knowledge.

It opened up a flood-gate of information and it’s up to the individual to waddle through to pick up and consume the right info to make an informed decision, rather than being bombarded with baked and half-truth in the likes of what being churned out by the current controlled media.

While the current situation is in a sort of chaos with one party claiming “victory” while the other behaving as if it suffered a “defeat”, I just wish that our elected government and representatives concentrate more on properly administering and governing the states than playing “victory-defeat” political game trying to retain power or demonizing the other.

Thanks to “internet empowerment”, we now know what they are doing and why they are doing it – so rest assure that we are not casting our votes in the dark anymore. We, in this case are the informed voters, on the fence sitters, and probably the “silent majority”.

  3. BTW. I wonder how the Galas & Batu Sapi folk could access that You Tube video when even I with my slow broadband in Petaling Jaya have a lousy viewing experience.

    • It should have been called brokeband… :D

Such a typical ill suffered when political hand reached to every nook and cranny.

  4. It looks like the traditional Silent Majority has swung back to BN now under our PM. I am sure the swung would be better if UMNO had cleansed its Youth leader. Soft approaches are now required to draw more fence sitters to BN side with one single objective – get back Selangor and Penang to put the DAP into hibernation.
