Today is 16 August. Until this morning, no one has seen the ’55 Years Merdeka’ celebrations official logo. Nor, has the campaign started. It is peculiar since in past years’ Merdeka celebrations, billboards are already up by this date.
When this amateurish ugly logo was first brought into public domain, the Minister for Information, Culture and Communications Dato’ Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, PhD who acts as the Chairman of Merdeka Celebrations Committee, was quick to deny that this is ‘the official logo’. This was his statement to the logo which drew so many flak, even from pro-Government new media practitioners:
No official logo for 55th Merdeka Day celebration — Rais
Posted on July 30, 2012, Monday
KUALA LUMPUR: Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim explained yesterday that no official logo is being used for the 55th Merdeka Day celebration this year except for the 1Malaysia logo, as was the case last year.
He said the theme for this year’s Merdeka Day celebration was ‘55 Tahun Merdeka Janji Ditepati’ (55 Years of Independence, Promises Fulfilled).
“The artwork used by some quarters so far is just an additional display material and not the official logo,” he said in a statement.
Rais said there would be other promotional material for display for the Aug 31 Merdeka Day and Sept 16 Malaysia Day celebrations.
Some quarters are questioning the reason for the use of a 55th Merdeka Day logo which, they claimed, had no quality in terms of art and was merely a combination of the 1Malaysia logo, the national flag and the theme for this year’s celebration. — Bernama
This makes the issue more perculiar. Since Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak’s tour around the nation on his ‘Jelajah Janji DiTepati’ meeting-the-rakyat sessions since April, all deemed successful and feedbacks have been very encouraging. It is only natural that the ’55 Years Merdeka’ celebrations is ‘punchier’. Hoever, it is not. It was said that the ’55 Years Merdeka’ lackluster issue was brought to the attention of Prime Minister Najib and a decision was made.
Practically, there are only 5-6 working days left before the Hari Kemerdekaan two Fridays from tomorrow. That is not withstanding that the whole of next week, practically all agencies are running on half optimum capability at best, due to Hari Raya Aidil Fitri which is coming on Sunday and school holidays. Even the Non Malays are on holiday mood.
So Minister in-charge for the ‘Merdeka 55 Years’ celebrations Dato’ Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim PhD, when can we expect to see this logo and celebrations campaign?
It was said that the Minister, who is also in charge of the arts, archives, culture and media was bent on not allowing the film about the lives of Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and Tun Dr Ismail A Rahman between May 1969 to January 1976, ‘Tanda Putera’, be screened at the cinemas before 13 GE. According to sources, his excuse is that some of the scenes may slight the Chinese even though Film Censorship Board already issued a PG13 certificate on 13 June.
Annual Merdeka celebrations had always been the pride for the Federal Government’s effort to harness the spirit of patriotism, unity, togetherness and moving forward, as a process of nation building and followthrough of previous success. Now, cocking up ’55 Years Merdeka’ celebrations would effectively shame Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak’s administration in catestrophic proportion.
Wouldn’t it, Dr Rais?
Just for the Minister to size up, the ‘I choose Malaysia’ campaign is really good.
