BN’s Machap candidate announced

ALOR GAJAH, April 2 (Bernama) — The MCA Alor Gajah division vice-chairman Lai Meng Chong, who is also political secretary to the Human Resources Minister, was announced as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the coming Machap state seat by-election.


The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Monday afternoon before some 2,000 members of BN component parties and local residents at the hgall of the Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Machap Baru, here.

Present were Melaka Chief Minister and state BN chief Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting and deputy president Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy, Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn, who is also the Member of Parliament for Alor Gajah and Human Resources Minister.

The announcement made in Kampung Baru Machap, the largest Chinese new village in Melaka, was apt as Lai was born in the village which has about 5,000 residents.

The Machap state constituency has 9,623 registered voters including 108 postal voters. The Chinese account for 45 percent of the voters, Malays 38 percent, Indians 15 percent and others two percent.

The Machap seat, which was previously known as Bukit Sedanan, fell vacant following the death of its BN assemblyman Datuk Wira Poh Ah Tiam, 55, on last March 15.

Machap which is 161.2 sq km in size, is one of the five state constituencies under the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat. The others are Rembia, Gadek, Durian Tunggal and Asahan.
