Tun Dr. Mahathir goes under the knife, today

At six am today, former Prime Minister and Bapa Perindustrian Malaysia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will be lightly sedated and wheeled into the operation theatre at IJN for his second multiple heart by-pass. The first time he had this risky surgery was 18 years ago, also by the same surgeon, Tan Sri Mr. Yahya Awang.

Tan Sri Mr. Yahya, a member of the illustrious Fellow Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow is an eminent cardiothoracic surgeon and was the former Director and Head of Surgery, IJN. He will be assisted by a team of surgeons and doctors, which include Dr. Hartzel Schaff, the eminent Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the infamous Mayo Clinic, in the US. Dr. Schaff have had extensive experience with elder heart by-pass patients, which include second by-pass.

When I spoke to Dato’ Mukhriz this afternoon, he said Tun Dr. Mahathir decided to undertake this ‘re-do’ heart by-pass two weeks ago, after going a series of test which include an angiogram. He consulted the surgeons and cardiologists thoroughly and convinced and satisfied with their explanations and plan how to resolve the necessary issues, to make him better.

Although the risk is double now, due to his age compared to the first time he had this done 18 years ago, however the surgeons have a very high confidence of gaining success, taking everything into consideration. Earlier this morning, they did an endoscopy so that he is cleared from any digestive problems, an effort to minimize complications during post surgery recovery.

Dato’ Mukhriz also said his father was in very high spirit and he enjoyed the company of his family, like any other day. His sheer determination clearly illustrate his zesty attitude to make the best of his life, to the fullest.

Last night (Monday), special prayers (sembahyang hajat and yasin recital) were held in many mosques, all over the country. At the Masjid Jame’, Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur about 350 people turned up in pouring torrential rain to offer prayers for the elder statesman.

Same prayers also were held and offered in Segambut, Petaling Jaya, Kubang Pasu, Sungai Petani, Langkawi, Simpang Renggam, Pulai, Johor Bahru and include far away places like Sandakan. So many ordinary rakyat showed their love for a man who had done so much for this country and changed the lives of the majority of Malaysians.

Girl-girl, my eleven year old “Rabbit” darling daughter also posted a special tribute for a statesman, “My memories with Tun Dr. Mahathir“, someone she always fondly thought of.

May God al Mighty bless Tun Dr. Mahathir for this risky open heart surgery, provide guidance and make the surgeons’ job easier, provide strength for his family, especially Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd. Ali, the loving wife of 51 years and Dato’ Marina, En. Mirzan, Dato’ Mokhzani and Dato’ Mukhriz and their respective spouses and children.

May God al Mighty show what is the best for everyone. InsyaAllah.
