Don: Mukhriz is a political heavyweight to be reckoned with.
ALOR STAR: First timer Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir survived the political tsunami in Kedah because he is a political heavyweight, according to an analyst.
Universiti Sains Malaysia research dean of Law, Government and International Studies College said Barisan would have been able to sustain the silent political tsunami if it had fielded more such heavyweight candidates.
“Mukhriz, who is the youngest son of revered national icon Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is a political celebrity unlike most other candidates who were contesting in Kedah,’’ he said.
Barisan was defeated in Kedah as it lost 11 out of the 15 parliament seats and 22 out of the 36 state seats.
Barisan won 14 parliament and 31 state seats in Kedah in the last genera election.
He noted that Mukhriz emerged victorious despite contesting a “shaky” seat that had strong opposition support base.
“It also shows that the voters still love and support Dr Mahathir,’’ he said.
The four parliament seats Barisan managed to cling on to in Kedah are Langkawi, Jerlun, Kubang Pasu and Alor Star.
Mukhriz said his father has advised him to be an elected representative who truly represent the rakyat who voted him in.
“I will focus my attention on the entire Jerlun parliamentary including the Ayer Hitam state constituency won by PAS,’’ he said.
Mukhriz said he would ensure equitable development in both the Ayer Hitam and Kota Siputeh state seats that are in the Jerlun parliamentary constituency.
Mukhriz defeated PAS’ Idris Ahmad by 2,205-vote majority.
