Call to deny Singapore control of independent power utility

By Sira Habibu, Alor Setar

SUNGAI PETANI: The Malaysian Government has been urged to stop foreign investors including Singapore companies from acquiring stake in Northern Utility Resources (NUR) Sdn Bhd that supplies electricity to Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said the matter was of grave public concern as it involved national security.

“We must not let go of our control over Telekom, water and electricity. Even the constructions of roads must be under our full control. If we allow foreigners to buy over strategic interest, there will be uncertainties as we do not know their agenda,’’ he said, noting that Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was toppled for selling off shares in its telecommunication company to Singapore.

Mukhriz said this in response to concerns over a proposed bid to take over NUR that was raised by Umno Kulim Hi-Tech branch Youth chief Faizal Mansor during a dialogue.

Faizal also questioned why the consortium that was interested to “buy over” NUR was allowed to deal directly with banks, as reported in newspaper two weeks ago.

NUR executive director Hashim Awang had confirmed that a consortium had submitted a “take over” proposal to RHB Bank, AmBank and CIMB Bank. NUR had taken loan amounting to RM1.1bil from the banks. Hashim had said that he did not understand why the consortium had submitted the take-over proposal to the banks without consulting NUR’s major shareholder.

Manfield Development Sdn Bhd is the major shareholder with 40% stake. Others shareholders are Jalinan Muhibbah Sdn Bhd, Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd. NUR had a good track record as no blackouts were recorded at the Hi-Tech Park ever since the independent power utility started supplying electricity to the area five years ago.

Dato’ Ir. Mohd.
