Why did DPM Najib forego his first opportunity to address UNGA?

DPM Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak cancelled his first opportunity to address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Saturday. This was announced late this afternoon.

Najib cancels trip to New York

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will not be going for a working visit to the United States from Sept 25 to Oct 1.

Najib was scheduled to deliver his maiden speech to the UN General Assembly on Saturday in New York.

According to a statement from the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, the cancellation of the trip was approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The statement added that among the reasons for the cancellation of the trip was due to the current global economical situation, which will demand the full attention of Najib to ensure that the national economy was on a solid footing.

“Furthermore, he (Najib) only took over as Finance Minister on Sept 17 and will need more time to be briefed on economical developments in the country by various departments and agencies under the Finance Ministry,” it said.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim will now lead the Malaysian delegation to the 63rd United Nations General Assembly.

This is something already arranged for quite sometime. Even Dato’ Syed Nazri already analysed the situation few days ago.

Why would DPM Najib do that? He was scheduled to be the second leader to address this UNGA and he cancelled this golden opportunity, last minute, because of “economic uncertainty”? A six day trip which could be shortened to two, is yet cancelled entirely and his slot was  then assigned to Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim instead.

Isn’t this highly irregular? Is there something that warrants DPM Najib not to leave the country, something really much more important than the recent Wall Street crashes which now also almost adversely affecting financial giants such as the Citigroup?

Last week, he already cancelled a working visit to Saudi Arabia, citing domestic political instability warranted his presence. And now this. Of late, the political scene had been somewhat ‘bumpy’.  The psycho effect of Anwar Ibrahim’s lie of taking over the Federal Government by 16 September 2008 must have carved a phobia to many mainstream right wingers.  Then SAPP’s abrupt announcement of quitting Barisan Nasional coalition. The much surprised Cabinet post swap between PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and DPM Najib attracted a lot attention.

The Riong Kali controlled media is trumping up the spin that DPM Najib is ‘playing ball’ with PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s  10 July announcement of ‘Transition Plan’, due June 2010.  Some UMNO members began to show skeptism into the follow through on this plan, although some leaders are bent to bet on this.

Despite all that, within the UMNO domain, last week DPM Najib reiterated his wish for UMNO Divisions to decide who will be the best candidate to be considered for the now precarious presidential candidate. The last UMNO Supreme Council meeting saw how UMNO leaders hit against PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and strongly ask him to go. Then there is so much talk along the grapevine about Najib will be leading contender for the President post while  International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin for the former’s post.

Lets watch all these developments rather closely.

  7. Remember blogger within this era, Abdullah and Najib has to standby in the presence of their own nation lest they be wiped out with a coup by Anwar. Anwar too has gear up his preparation to have a transitional change of government smoothly.

Anwar has camouflage his strategy by not revealing any more date for takeover. The opponent knows about the situation and wants to keep abreast in this situation. Therefore all trips being cancel stay put until the chess game is over. For the mean time the game of chess is still at play to see, conquer and check mate.

In PKR only Anwar has the list not even the leaders have any ideas of whom will be presence in the MP list.

The one that have much wit and intelligent will conclude the game at it advantages. Whom do you think will win?
