AKAR Jerlun, 23-25 July 2010

Pusat Khidmat Parlimen Jerlun will be organising a National level adventure kayak race commencing July 23, 2010 in Jerlun, Kedah Darul Aman.

This three day event is co-organised with the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports and UMNO Jerlun in collaboration with ANSARA, Malaysian Canoe Association, as well as Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.

This Adventure Kayak Race will showcase 180 canoe representing 60 teams participating from all over the country. Competing for the Grand Prize of RM10,000, paddlers will take part in four categories; National Open, Closed Institute of Higher Leaning, Closed Institute of Teacher’s Training and Closed Kedah.

This Adventure Kayak Race will negotiate the river and waterways of Jerlun covering a distance of 53km. Paddlers will pass through paddy fields, towns as well as historical sites in Jerlun, which boasts two former capitals of ancient Kedah; Kota Siputeh and Kota Naga. The starting point for the first and second day is in fact of historical significance as evidenced by drawings found on the cave walls of Gua Kerbau.

Akar Jerlun is also a community initiative that is hoped to will grow to greater heights in future. The coordination of this event does not only involve statutory bodies and professionals, but brings together the people of Jerlun from all walks of life, youth as well as housewives working hand in hand to ensure the success of this event. The hope is that this Adventure Kayak Race will present wide exposure and become a platform for the locals to kick start  an economic initiative for  eco-based activities in such locations akin to what we have in Jerlun.
