Melayu ‘bankrap politik’

Getting the right information

PKR MPs Johari Abdul and Saifuddin Nasution, at the DCNS booth in DSA 2012. The model on the display is the new generation scorpene submarine

The current Defense Services Asia DSA 2012 exhibition and series of forums being held at PWTC is a good platform for military industrialists and practitioners to get together and exchange notes on the current technology and what is to come. This year’s DSA is the largest so far since the first in 1986. The heavy presence of government agencies attending very much proven the Federal Government commitment in the defense of the realm.

Altogether, 826 companies, representatives and agencies of global military industry participated in the four days event. The DSA 2o12 also featured discourses and talks such as the Putrajaya Forum, on top of the usual product and services exhibition and demonstrations.

This is a good opportunity for all interested quarters, which include the Opposition to gather information.

The current Parliament sitting provided opportunity for some PKR MPs to make time and attend the DSA 2012. Seen at the DSA 2012 is PKR Secretary General and MP for Machang Saifuddin Naution Ismail and MP for Sg Petani Johari Abdul.

Amongst the booth they visited is the DCNS, which is the constructor for the Perdana Class scorpene submarines and the originator of the Gowind class frigate. Gowind is currently is platform and closest model for the Boustead Naval Shipyard‘s pitch for the upcoming Royal Malaysian Navy littoral combat ships.

They were seen talking to DCNS representatives. Amongst the queries they made were on the scorpene submarines.

It is good that these MPs come to these exhibitions and enrich themselves with more information. More important, the accurate information and to be taken in the right context. However, one doubts what is the amount of information they could get within a ten minute visit to the booths. Representatives at trade booths such as DSA or LIMA not necessarily the subject matter expert in specific products. Usually, there are specific assigned experts for detailed queries in their head quarters.

For the record, both MPs declined Minister of Defence’s invitation to visit the KD Tun Razak during LIMA last December and see for themselves what the Navy had acquired for the strategic defense system of this nation. Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng, accompanied by both his Deputy Chief Ministers did respond to the invitation and did dive with KD Tun Razak, 30 nautical mile off the coast of Langkawi. Immediately after the dive, Lim is convinced that the submarines are necessary strategic assets for the defense, praised the professionalism of the submariners and the Navy as a whole.

PKR representatives never responded to MINDEF’s invitation, as far earlier as the arrival of KD Tun Razak on July 2010. And yet, with the minimal or limited information they have, they often choose to spin on military acquisition such as the submarines, with a malice political connotation.

This is not the responsible thing to do as politicians. They should learn to be constructive Opposition and help the nation to go forward. Instead, they tend to use information they can their hands on to spin, manipulate and perpetuate lies, in their sordid agenda of ‘politics of hatred’ to get into power.

Tomorrow, pro-Opposition NGO SUARAM is expected to make the presence here in DSA 2012.

Looking forward towards strategic partnership

Minister of Defence Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced many ‘first’ in the series of continuous DSA exhibitions since 2006 and this year’s is the most successful. “This year, we have a lot of ‘first’ forums and discourses”.

He also said that this year, the focus is not on the value of contract signed but instead the technology and collaboration spin-off that could be continuously developed for the Malaysian defense industry in years to come.

“Today, we signed 15 agreements. We want to see what will be generated from these. Our focus is on the preparation for future defense”.

A photo download from this blog is being displayed at the DCNS booth

He was speaking to media, whom he described as ‘partners’ in making this year’s DSA the biggest and most successful so far, RM 4 billion amount of agreements and MOUs. Expected value to be signed is RM 25 billion. All together, 826 participating companies, agencies and representatives exhibited their products and services.

The were several forums, talks and round table discourses held for this year’s DSA exhibition. The highlight is the Putrajaya Forum 2012 organized by Malaysian Institute of Defense and Security (MIDAS). The participation was very encouraging.

Perception vs Coincidence

Malaysia Airlines B747-400 with PW4056 engines

The loss of No 1 Pratt and Whitney PW4056 engine during flight on MH002 last night over the Malacca Straits was the first for the Malaysia Airlines B747-400s 23 years history. Never before, Malaysia Airlines lost an engine during flight on thus type.

There were 351 passengers onboard, with 21 crew operating which include four flight crew in the aircraft with the registration no. 9M-MPF. The aircraft was in the initial climb out of Kuala Lumpur about 10-15 seconds after becoming airborne when the left hand outboard engine emitted a loud bang and sparks. The crew continued the climb to safe altitude then shut the engine down, dumped fuel and returned to Kuala Lumpur for a safe landing about 90 minutes after departure.

All along, they were glitches on the sensors or any other electrical or electronic system, which include cabin lights and entertainment system. Failure also include hydraulic system. A flight to India was turned back not so long ago. Recently, we personally were delayed from London Heathrow on the way back home on MH001. However, never before an engine failed during flight.

Malaysia Airlines engineering has been noted for their good service standards, even though there are some ‘unhealthy practices’ by a minority of the more errand lot. The 650 odd LAMEs have had aircrafts safe in the air, for the last 40 years of Malaysia Airlines history. The airlines was free from major mechanical mishaps.

Is it a coincidence, that this happened for an aircraft which has been in service for the national carrier?

Regardless, the perception on Malaysia Airlines is really bad. Some people are even simply speculating that all these is happening because of ‘disgruntled employees’, due to issues such as the ‘share swap’ that was inked on 9 August last year and also the CCF, which has yet to materialise and proven to be beneficial to Malaysia Airlines.

The new board of directors of Malaysia Airlines must own up to this more glaring substantially negative attention towards the national carrier, which in the past is known for its service standards and realibility. A flight from Bangalore to Kuala Lumpur was turned back to its origin when the weather radar failed during flight, a day ago.

This is something Malaysia Airlines got to really improve, and has to be done very quickly. Now that the A380-800s is coming in June and operational from July, a lot needed to be done from now. Malaysia Airlines executives should learn from the Garuda experience. Today, perception is the primary importance for the plc which was listed in Bursa Malaysia almost 25 years ago.

Where is the NST Group heading?

The recent The New Sunday Times interview with the direct connotation of former MIC President Samy Vellu bitching against and blaming Fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad drew attention of many, on the direction of where NST Group is going. Even former NST journos feel that the piece was more about “Pitting a BN elder against another”.

Earlier than that, fingers point towards a certain ‘inner circle’ within NST which supposed “Leaked information out” on an eventual meeting that did not happen. Much earlier than that too, Berita Harian posted a piece on then most wanted global terrorist Osama Bin Laden which is of-tangent to Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak ‘Moderate Muslim’ agenda.

NST used to the be premier English daily, where it becomes the most credible reference point. Be it political, administrative or even business news. It was the daily diet for the most affluent of Malaysian society every morning. In fact, the most respectable and sought after journos were NST alumnus.

Malaysians abroad flock to places like Malaysia Hall in Bryanston Square, to come and read NST even though it was a few days late. UMNO Club in London used to hold ‘Coffee Corners’ in the dining hall, on issues featured in the front page of the English daily and of course the editorial’s piece. New policies like ‘Look East’ or ‘Buy British Last’.

We personally remember how students and Malaysians working in London converged, to read on the latest of the ‘Constitutional crisis’ of late 1983. Of course, s teenagers we were personally more interested in getting Spurs’ latest Le Coq Sportif jersey from Lillywhite. We were still in school when NST brought the detailed report on the ‘Memali Incident’ up north, 500kms away.

Even in the trying times on the first two years of then Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s sacking, NST stood fast to bring the most credible information on the latest of the nation’s most watched and international observed criminal cases trial. It was also the most controversial ‘political circus’ in Malaysian history so far. Malaysia, was suddenly infected by the mob street demonstration ‘Reformasi’.

NST did a good job of ‘controlling the damage’. Most of the nation was focused towards economic recovery rather than pander to Anwar’s ‘politics of hatred’ and systematical demonisation of authorities strategy.

The stead fastness brought upon confidence on the business and commercial sector, on Tun Dr Mahathir’s policies and more importantly his ‘outside the box’ approach to stop the economy and capital market from bleeding. Inadvertently, in the whole scheme of things Tun Dr. Mahathir leadership managed to pull through and his policies and plans followed through.

The recovery was fast enough that even though it was then the most difficult political test the ruling government had ever seen since 45 years of Independence, Tun Dr Mahathir put everything back on track which include the nation’s stature in the international political arena.

NST should share some degrees of credit to the success.

So where is the NST Group is heading now? How is it fitting towards Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak’s agenda, now that majority of Malaysians are ready to stand by him?

NST should forget about re-inventing themselves into unfamiliar turfs and go back to the basics, where they were once good at. Recover the niche ‘pull factor’ and become a market leader for that. Get the best talents for the job. Maximise technology for the purpose.

Dr Mahathir: Streets demonstration is destructive

“Streets demonstration is destructive. Here (in Malaysia), there is a price to be paid”.

Fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today during a media conference, in Putrajaya.

“There are places for that. We are not Syria”.

Commenting on the question for ‘electoral reforms already being instituted or in the process’ but still BERSIH 3.0 is still being planned, “They don’t really have issues”.

In the same media conference, he described former long time MIC President Samy Vellu as “Has been”. “We are all has beens”, acknowledging that they are all politicians of the previous era. He said he held no grudge against the former Minister of Works.

Thank you, Minister

The longest serving Minister in-charge of Women and Family Development, Dato' Seri Shahrizat A Jalil

Yesterday, was the last day for Minister for Women and Family Development Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. Her position in the Cabinet has been vacated as her membership in the Dewan Negara as a Senator expires today.

She has been a Cabinet Minister in His Majesty Seri Paduka Yang DiPertuan Agong’s Government since April 2004, in the current post. She was acting Minister for Federal Teritorries when then Tan Sri Isa Samad had to vacate his cabinet post in 2005. In the broader strokes, many have the opinion she was a good minister for the portfolio.

She was also the MP for Lembah Pantai for 13 years and she has been often commended for the swift actions, whenever her contituents needed her service. Especially in a crisis. She brought upon massive public housing projects for the lower income in Lembah Pantai and resolved many of the squatter issues, during that time.

We in BigDogDotCom wish to record our appreciation for her service as a Parliamentarian and  in the Federal Government continuously since April 1995, when she was appointed Parlimentary Secretary for Ministry of Youth and Sports  by then Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Little (turning) Red Riding Hood

The CEO-talk-of-the-town: Hood bin Osman

The current scandal first brought upon cybersphere debate by someone who now lives 7,000 miles away in North England and eventually now should be regarded as ‘a threat to national security’, is very much the ‘market talk’ of the town at the moment. It was been the last ten days or so.

According to Raja Petra, Hood Osman did ride on the Anwar “Mat King Leather” Ibrahim’s gravy-train then. The Kewangan Bersatu Berhad play, of taking loan from Hong Leong Finance Bhd. back in 1997 was with the intention for then the Deputy Prime Minister’s and Finance Minister’s war chest to topple then Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Anwar already made his moves of a grandiose plan clearly with the infamous ‘Cronyism’ speech at the 1997 UMNO General Assembly by then the UMNO Youth Head Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Most if not a substantial sumnof the RM 445 million raised is thought to finance the ‘political coup d’etat‘ against Dr Mahathir. After all, Anwar successfully toppled En Ghafar Baba as UMNO Deputy President in December of 1993, where the former managed to get 19 Sabah UMNO nominations against the latter. Ghafar was the founder of UMNO’s latest state liaison. A typically of ambitious Anwar, with the US backing (re: the Vice President Al Gore “Reformasi” speech and then US Ambassador to Kuala Lumpur John R. Malott’s stance), thought he could ‘kill’ Dr Mahathir of.

The ‘political coup d’etat‘ play failed and Anwar was sacked. Later, he was tried for abuse of power and exhaustively served his sentence.

Hood is believed became a tool of an evil plot, not just to make Anwar the Prime Minister. It is also about ascending Anwar to power, as part the Neo Jewish agenda to ‘re-colonise’ at the time what seems to be the loudest Islamic nation and champion of the underdogs, especially in international issues like Palestine and Bosnia.

The borrowers of the RM 445 million loan

In 1998 Hong Leong Finance, tried to get their money back. Then started the demand. What is baffling is that how could PNB allowed someone like Hood, who undertook so much loan and personally indemnify such a huge financial commitment be appointed to the CEO seat, without having the full disclosure. That is a corporate negligence. PNB Chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid and CEO Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah should own up to this.

What is worrying, what if someone like Hood who have been proven could be manipulated once in the KBB deal got himself into another compromise position where he is now, as the CEO at the moment. Wouldn’t that somewhat jeopardise Kontena Nasional, which is a PNB company?

Is PNB fully aware of other financial commitments and agreements that Hood participated and be a party to?

At Kontena Nasional level, PNB should do the right thing and do a comprehensive audit on all decisions, commitments and agreements made and participated by Kontena Nasional ever since Hood came onboard.

A system for ‘people due diligence’ should be incorporated soon. PNB cannot afford a financial scandal, especially now 13th general elections is around the corner. Its utter shameful for PNB to allow itself to be dragged into financial scandals, especially when there is obviously a vetting system failure.

The KBB scandal is not a smallish ‘red’. It is a big one. Anwar did ride on Hood too, once. Let us not allow Kontenna Nasional and PNB be dragged down because of his personal problem.

The ‘wolf’ should be chased away.

Its time for rakyat to voice their discontent for MAS-AirAsia CCF, on the streets

The issue about the Malaysia Airlines-AirAsia ‘share swap’ and CCF was inked exactly seven months ago. So far, we Malaysians failed to see how it benefited the national carrier. Instead, what is seen is the AirAsia’s partners abuse and devouring Malaysia Airlines. Even the management is abusing it, for the benefit of AirAsia.

Countless of blog postings were made. UMNO leaders spoke against it in closed party dos. MPs, which include BN backbenchers, even strongly raised against it in the Dewan Rakyat.

The popular belief is that it has fallen to deaf ears to the Federal Government. As more abuses are being imposed against Malaysia Airlines for AirAsia’s benefit, many analyst are getting worried that Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak is either ignoring the matter for the time being or procastinanting the decision, which has yet shown any positive effect on and for Malaysia Airlines.

So far, the business model for the national carrier already changed seven times, at a rate of once a month. No clear direction has been put forth and almost everyone within the company is literally ‘lost at sea’. What has been seen for far, the new board of directors which comprises the operators of AirAsia cancelled out a promising and growingly popular service; Firefly jet service. Of course, one of the immediate executive decision made was Malaysia Airlines sucked off RM 18 million for the sponsorship of a bottom-rung EPL club, which is the private venture of two of the new BODs who came in from AirAsia.

Word has it there are more to come. An immediate example is after self-excuted losing several intercontinental international destinations as AirAsia X finds its “unprofitable to operate” which include London, they are about to impose Malaysia Airlines to take over the two brand new A330-300s about to be delivered by May and June. To many, Malaysia Airlines is a one-stop agency for AirAsia to fully prostitute for their ultimate pleasure, at any time of their convenience.

What is clear, almost all of the 22,000 employees of Malaysia Airlines are looking that the ‘hostile takeover’ of the company that they help and had a lot of the sweat and tears to develop the past 40 years and stood by diligently through several folds of management change, with utter disgust.

So will their immediate families and those who have left the service and strongly having “MAS at heart”. In all, that is an absolute 100,000 votes in Selangor. If spread over 20 parliamentary constituencies, that is definite loss for BN in Selangor and part of Wilayah Persekutuan.

If BN is ever serious of taking Selangor back from the grasp of Opposition, then the Federal Government has to decide on this pressing matter very quickly. A lot at stake here. After all, Prime Minister Najib is the UMNO Liaison Chief for the wealthiest state in the federation.

Probably its time issues pertaining to Malaysia Airlines be taken into the streets and the rakyat demonstrate their utmost displeasure and discontent on how the national carrier has been systematically structured to die. It is even done with the Federal Government being aware of the unhealthy competition they allowed AirAsia to thread into the national carrier’s turf, even for the wrong reasons, justifications and excuses.

If they can allow issues like ‘unfair elections’ be taken to the streets for the third time, then the pride the Jalur Gemilang carrier of the skies should be championed too. This time, by the ordinary blokes on the streets. This is not at all political. Be clear and loud about it. It is about the unequivocal pride of the nation.
