If it’s good, it sells

The scene at Seri Taman, where Tun Dr Ismail, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra and Tun Abdul Razak Hussein confered

Acclaimed Malaysian film maker Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba’s prolific movie about the most trying time and crisis of two selfless leaders Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman had to endure between May 1969 till January 1976, ‘Tanda Putera’ which is scheduled to be released  for public screening on 13 September, would be postpone to an undisclosed time.

The excuse given is rather lame.

It doesn’t make sense at to postpone the release of the movie because of “activities”.

It was previewed to a selected audience including media on 17 July. Almost all who prevalently exited out from the cinema after the movie was screened, were teary-eyed. One could actually hear sporadic soft sobbinsg during some scenes in the movie. They saw how the two leaders endure challenges and gave the ultimate sacrifice to put Malaysia back on the rail towards unity, togetherness, progress and most important of all, mending the wounds of bloody racial riot of 13-16 May in the path of challenges from the extremists, subversive elements and communist terrorism.

The scene during National Operation Council (NOC)

And all agreed that ‘Tanda Putera’ is a great movie and its sense of historical events and all the mitigating circumstances of these events should be portrayed to Malaysians, especially the younger generation, so that the nation shall not repeat these events. It is about reliving Malaysia’s most trying formative years.

If it is that good, then it should sell. Malaysians would want to see this movie. The power of consumerism would be tested here amidst all pre-conceived connotations and prejudices about this movie. In short, it would be a very commercially viable, come-what-may what ever ‘activities’ that some would think that it would distract or impair the sale-ability of this movie.

Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, played by Rusid Ramli, making his rounds visiting the rural folks in his national and rural development program implementation

The minister-in-charge of Information, Communications and Multimedia, who is also responsible for the archives and antiquities, should ensure that the movie is out during this Hari Raya Aidil Fitri period, which also co-incide with school holidays. The Minister should use all the media available and friendly to him to promote and ‘sell’ this movie. More over, when National Film Board (FINAS) and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC) are collaborative partners to Pesona Production in making this much awaited movie happened.

Unless the minister-in-charge has some political motives for not being bold enough to challenge the younger Malaysians’ reaction as an outcome from the public screening of this movie. Then, the Prime Minister should be aware of what Tun Dr Ismail used to sound out if he had to face such an issue or situation; “Don’t sweep things under the carpet”. It is a matter of principle.

Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, who was suffering from leukemia and Deputy Prime Minister Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, who was suffering from chronic heart disease and throat cancer

Majority of Malaysians don’t even know what Tun Razak did, how he did it and what challenges he faced. Let alone Tun Dr Ismail. His service as the Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister only lasted a little over four years. The duos’ contribution to what Malaysia is today from the decisions made within the five-and-half years are immense and very strategic. Some of their policies are still implemented till present day, as important tools of nation building.

Screen this movie. It is worth it. Commercially worth it. Historically worth it. Yes, to some people the truth hurts. But to majority of the people, this movie is so enlightening. Better to bite the bullet now, than later. It is the perfect ‘gift’ for Malaysians in this 55 years commemoration of nationhood.

  1. I support BD’s view that the film be allowed to be released by Hari Raya That’s the time when the young go to the movies after the HR visiting.

Why should FINAS be concerned about promoting the film in that way? And say it’s not political in consideration. Shouldn’t the film makers and producers be the ones to decide? Has FINAS a share in the film company?

Bukan kah satu tugas FINAS mempromosikan filem Melayu?

  2. Biggie,

I don’t see the justification at all of postponing the public screening of this movie. Everyone says Its good. Even successful movie makers such as Yusof Haslam commended & fully supportive of this.

If cinemas can screen racists like Namewee’s stupid movie, why the hell Shuhaimi Baba’s work based on history should be temporarily ‘frozen’?

Unless cinema operators are racist & prefer to screen racists’ like Namewee’s work as oppose to another work with great historical & nationalism values.

BD, start your campaign. Its the nationalistic thing to do, like you said, to commemorate 55 yrs of nationhood. Like it or not, 13 May racial riots incited by extremists, subersive elements & communists is true, did happen & part of our history. So were the assassinations of IGP in 1974 & Perak CPO in 1975.

Younger Malaysians must know all these.

  3. Salam Bro,
Garapan “pre, during dan post” kejadian 13 mei terlalu laju.. tiada ‘time line indication’ yang jelas.

    * p/s :Pada 13 Mei logo DAP sepatutnya tak der gelang biru tu bro…😉

    • Memang benar.

      1. Peristiwa berdarah 13 Mei ialah rentetan pihak ekstremis, anasir subersif, pengganas kommunis dan mereka yang sengaja menangguk diair keruh mengambil peluang proses politik melalui amalan demokratik untuk disalahgunakan
      2. Tun Razak dan Tun Dr Ismail amat fokus dan tegas dalam kerja mereka untuk memulihkan keadaan dan mengembalikan keadaan supaya aman dan perasaan curiga dan pra-sangka buruk dikurangkan
      3. Mereka berdepan dengan cabaran seperti;
3.1. Ancaman komunis yang mula strategi membunuh pemimpin
3.2. Mereka berdua sendiri sakit dan makin lama, makin buruk keadaan fizikal mereka

    • HaHa. Please compare the 2nd movie of Namewee (Hantu gnagster) and see how many likes he got. Please also check how many have viewed his trailers. Seems like this movie will need another bailout or UMNO giving out free ticket to push up the box office. Namewee will score millions in boxoffice again!

      • Haiyya, how shallow man you. Number of viewers recorded in Internet is proof of popularity? Where got proof of the “box office millions scored” by the samseng looking fellow?

      • so he has another movie? lets see if it can pass the 7 million that nasi lemak 2.0 got…

Fasal “historical error” tu, jangan risaukan. Itu filem, bukan “historical documentary”.

Setuju, kontroversi boleh membawa jualan banyak. Saya fikir di Hollywood, kadangkala sengaja di reka kontroversi supaya naikkan minat orang nak tengok. Cameron, pengarah filem Titanic, hebohkan dia tak akan ambil gaji jika box office receipts tak memuaskan. Akhirnya berduyun orang menonton, bertan mereka dapat duit.

  5. Tuan Blogger,

    Salam Ramadan.

    • Today, UMNO leaders are so phobia to talk about ‘Melayu’. “Must take care the feelings of our friends. Must observe sensitivities”.

Even Tun Dr Mahathir openly complain about this.

The Malays must be ballsy. Defending their rights, doesn’t make them racists. This movie as I understand it, it’s about telling a story what happened in the past.

Why do the Malays hv to be apologetic about 13 May? It wasnt them who started the provocation.

How does one feel when Non Malays drive around in trucks across one’s kampung with brooms sticking out and banners stating “Sapu Melayu” & “Melayu balik kampung, tanam jagung”! Would one react?

Younger Malaysians must know what transpired in the days before the 13 May incidence and how extremists, radicals & communist terrorists were using the opportunity of the May 1969 GE to sow hatred, incite & instigate. That’s the truth!

I remembered reading about former IGP Tun Hanif Omar’s comment about BERSIH 3.0 “I can see some elements who were behind May 13 and still around in this”

Don’t allow chicken shit politicians to deny the majority’s opportunity to learn the truth on what actually happened.

      • Those who want a clearer idea of what kind of election campaign speeches put out by the Opposition, especially the DAP, during the 1969 general elections, the kind of rude, provocative words and utterances, as well as obscene acts, gestures and gesticulations made by the Opposition party members and supporters when they went on convoys of cars, vans and lorries celebrating additional seats won, some even unzipping their trousers as they passed by Kampong Bahru, KL, and the Police barracks in Pudu, Jalan Travers and Brickfields, where Police wives and children were watching them – simply Google

13 May 1969: A Tragedy, published by the National Operations Council, October 1969.

Many of the Police reports referred to in that booklet were made by Police Officers and men who witnessed the events themselves.

There are also accounts of what actually happened when the race riots began and ran its course.

      • PS:

It’d be good to read the NOC booklet on the 13 May 1969 Tragedy before watching the film. It’ll certainly broaden one’s mind.

  6. Let the film be released and screened and let the people judge. After all, everyone’s saying that we are mature enough and the ghosts of May 13 has been exorcised. So why the paranoia now? Have no fear. Life goes on. Let us hold precious and cherish what we have now in Malaysia today. 1 Malaysia.
