Syed Faisal joins MAHB board

PETALING JAYA (Dec 5, 2012): Datuk Syed Faisal Albar, previously reported to be Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s nominee to take over from Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad as managing director (MD) of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), has been appointed to the board of the airport operator.
Yesterday, MAHB told Bursa Malaysia that Syed Faisal, who has been an independent non-executive director of Hong Leong Bank Bhd since leaving Pos Malaysia Bhd last year, is now a non-independent non-executive director of the company.
He was group managing director and CEO of Pos Malaysia before it was taken over by conglomerate DRB-Hicom Bhd.
The route is not an unfamiliar one, as previous senior executives of Malaysia Airlines such as its former MD and CEO Tengku Azmil Zaharuddin and former chairman Tan Sri Munir Majid were both placed on the board of the airline before later taking on the top job.
Bashir is on a one-year contract, which will end in June 2013.
MAHB also announced that Tunku Mahmood Fawzy Tunku Muhiyiddin would be joining the board as a non-independent and non-executive director.
Mahmood Fawzy has previously held posts in Khazanah Nasional, a major shareholder in MAHB, and Pos Malaysia.
A Khazanah nominee Jamilah Hashim has resigned from her post as a non-independent and non-executive director, a process of rotation based on the directive of Khazanah Nasional.

It is a mystery why Khazanah Holdngs Bhd appointed a corporate has-been like Syed Faisal into Malaysia Airports. He did fairly when he was the CEO of NTSP Bhd. Then he joined Pos Malaysia Bhd. However, when DRB-Hicom took over Pos Malaysia, Syed Faisal was not retained. Its a demonstration that Syed Faisal is not recognized as a corporate-wizard by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary.
The Sun Biz story is right. Why would Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar appoint a corporate has been like Syed Faisal, who has no relevant experience in airport operations or airlines into Malaysia Airports?
Unless, there is something non kosher in the play. If Riong Kali’s whipping boy is appointed into Malaysia Airports, then probably the deposed media Dark Lord is initiating a move for an eventual Tony Fernandes’s entry into the success airport operator. It is no mystery that Fernandes would want to control at lucrative airport, under his Tune Group company and make up for the future reduction on earnings to do competition like Malindo Airways and Firefly Jet coming up soon.
It is no secret that Azman is close to Riong Kali and Fernandes. Riong Kali was the Chairman for AirAsia X.
‘Airport Spring’: Fernandes’s morbid attempt for passengers ‘uprising’ against MAHB
Azman should not forget this time last year, Fernandes launched an ‘Airport Spring’ against Malaysia Airports. And at that time, he was still a BOD and Exco member of a GLC (Malaysia Airlines). Both Malaysia Airports and Malaysia Airlines are GLCs under Khazanah Holdings.
Previous association with ‘Level Four’ is enough for Khazanah to keep a Riong Kali Whipping Boy like Syed Faisal far away at bay.
This appointment is a few months before KLIA2 goes into operations. Malaysia Airports MD Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad’s contract is also up for renewal next year. It could also be deduced that Syed Faisal’s appointment also got something to do with Fernandes wanting more land for his Air Asia Corporate HQ proposal.
It was highlighted also that Malaysia Airports is in the bidding of Stansted Airport, the infamous purposed designed terminal by Sir Norman Foster. It is interesting to note that AirAsia X recently withdrew the service from Kuala Lumpur. There is an off chance that Fernandes is interested in the airport instead of the destination. As remarked by someone, “Fernandes must get more in everything”.
In anything involving Riong Kali, ‘Level Four’ mini kingdom and its associates, it is wise to be reminded with George Santayana’s words of wisdom. What happened in the past must always be the basis of caution when involving a dealings with these people.

Is MAHB still the “victim” of Machiavellian corporate manoeuvrings or a willing player in the business-politics nexus that prevails in Malaysia (and in other countries too, to be fair)?
Maybe MAHB needs a good shakeup to rouse it out of its bureaucratic torpor and to face up to the competition from other countries/economies determined to secure pre-eminent regional air hub status (the usual suspects being Korea’s Seoul Incheon Airport, Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok International Airport and Singapore’s Changi Airport).
Because, in the aviation industry, it’s no longer business as usual any more.
And, maybe, the present board and senior managment of MAHB just “doesn’t get it”?
