Pak Lah: I’m not sleeping with the enemy

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Under fire from pro-Umno bloggers, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi denied today that the release of a book on his years as prime minister is a conspiracy to attack the Malay nationalist party.

The contents of the book as well as the choice of PKR lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar, the daughter of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to launch the book in Singapore earlier set tongues wagging online.

“The principle of openness means that we must be ready to give space for anybody to speak. But do not make an assumption that the book was written by Pak Lah who has conspired with the opposition to attack his own party,” Abdullah (picture) said in a statement here, referring to himself by his popular moniker.

“Whatever criticism given in my interview in the book was made because I want to see Umno given continued mandate and trust by the people.”

“Awakening: The Abdullah Years in Malaysia”, a book on his short reign as the prime minister who succeeded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, features an exclusive interview where the usually quiet man finally speaks out against his detractors.

In the days following its release, the book dominated headlines in the media with heavy focus given to Pak Lah’s words on Dr Mahathir and what the former prime minister described as “unwarranted attacks” on his person that eventually led to his ouster.

Pro-Umno bloggers have since accused Abdullah of being a “mouthpiece” of the opposition with the release of the book, painting its editors Prof Bridget Welsh and Prof James Chin as alleged anti-Barisan Nasional (BN) dissenters.

Today, Abdullah denied he had a hand in the book’s tone or the decision to have Nurul Izzah launch the book in Singapore.

“Since I am not the publisher, printer, editor not the author of the book, I do not know, am not informed and not responsible for any invitations to launch and discuss the book,” Pak Lah explained.

“The news of an opposition leader attending the book launch in Singapore — even if it is true — was the decision of the publishers, not me.”

The Singapore launch has since been cancelled, according to the book’s editors today, who earlier postponed a companion event in Kuala Lumpur due to the growing controversy over the tome.

On Saturday, the editors decided to postpone the launch here, citing concerns over its “politicisation” and sensationalisation by media organisations in their reportage of certain portions of the book.

Today, Chin also denied that Nurul Izzah’s scheduled attendance had contributed to the cancellation of the Singapore launch, and repeated the hope that the public will read the book in its entirety before making any comment.

Abdullah has also clarified that he was not planning on attending the launch event, to dispel any notions that the book was written and endorsed by him, explaining that it was not written under his request or sponsorship.

On Saturday, Welsh and Chin noted in their open letter that some media outlets had wrongly categorised “Awakening” as “Pak Lah’s book”.

They pointed out that this was inaccurate as the book was a collection of multiple views from different persons, including politicians across the divide and academic observers.

Despite the postponement of the launch, the duo said the book will remain available at book stores nationwide.

**************

Either PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah is totally stupid or is part of the sinister agenda when he stated “Whatever criticism given in my interview in the book was made because I want to see Umno given continued mandate and trust by the people”.

Is it a very well known fact that co-editors of the book Welsh and Chin have never had said or written anything positive about the Federal Government under Barisan Nasional or UMNO as a nationalist party.

“Reforming UMNO” is in the tone of abuse-of-power-convict Anwar Ibrahim’s battle cry . PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah is recklessly obtuse to willing give long interviews with answers to questions which could be manipulated to demonise the government and UMNO leadership by known anti-UMNO academicians.

PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah’s quick response to the notion of “Sleeping With The Enemy” substantiated with clear evidence only to demonstrate that he is guilty as charged.

The fact that PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar who was invited and slotted to launch the book in Singapore on 30 August symbolises that Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim personally endorsing the book. As Nurul Izzah continues to defend the book, is strengthened the evidence that the Opposition especially PKR is backing PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah for his contribution to demonise government’s policies and strategic plans and indirectly, weaken UMNO.

It is interesting to note that Welsh and Chin decided to publicize about the book a day before Hari Raya and originally planned to launch the book in Singapore and invite Nurul Izzah for it, a day before Hari Kemerdekaan. Obviously, the significance of these days are selected for specific strategy for the purpose of being political and achieving a desired impact.

Particularly the Malays, who are the majority of the country and recently in 13GE proven to back Barisan Nasional and UMNO.

It is unbelievable that PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah admitted he had neither the knowledge nor influence about the planned 30 August launch in Singapore by Nurul Izzah. Then again if he cannot even excert control over a book which uses his interview as the fundamental basis, it is no mystery why he had no control when his aides and closest associations made the decisions, gave instructions and managed the government and party for his behalf.

Needless to day, PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah was guilty then for syndicating and franchising the management of this nation to persons who did not swear in the name of Allah s.w.t. to take responsibilities for it. Now, he is guilty for allowing himself to be a ‘ventriloquist dummy’ for Anwar Ibrahim’s wet dream.

Then again there are evidence that sacked-Deputy-President-of-UMNO Anwar Ibrahim trying to make a comeback into UMNO, via PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Please read PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah’s past sins to the nation and Malaysians. We are willing to bet these wont be included in his interview to Welsh and Chin and also his autobiography.

  1. […] book be exploited by politicians especially from the opposition in order to further their cause. The fact that Nurul Izzah is launching it proves that a) the opposition is politicising it and b) there is no such […]

  2. If he is “not sleeping with the enemy”, he must be so damned naive, stupid and unpolitical, innit?

Why must you allow such things, Tun Dol? Why layan the anti-UMNO, anti-Malays, anti-Malaysia American Brigit woman and Singaporean Chin bloke? Why give lengthy interviews, unwittingly answered all sorts of ill intended questions.

Now that you kena all sorts of brickbats, thank God you are a Muslim, Islam Hadari and all that – I don’t have to fear you committing suicide, do I?

    • Could the last question asked be due to thestar.com report on “More people thinking of suicide”? –

The number of people in Klang Valley expressing suicidal thoughts to Befrienders Kuala Lumpur last year is almost double that of 2008. Wonder why the year 2008 was chosen for comparison – that’s the year Tun Dol lost the 2/3 Parliamentary majority UMNO/BN had always enjoyed except for a brief period before.

In 2008, 1,393 persons expressed that they had suicidal feelings, but the number shot up to 2,668 last year.

When it comes to race, the Chinese led the pack, making up 60% of callers, followed by Indians and Malays.

Befrienders said the reason more people were having suicidal thoughts could be due to an increasing number of people living under stressful conditions. Some people have stressful conditions brought unto them, others brought stressful conditions unto themselves.

      • People who even contemplate suicides are pussy.

Cant face real life, so taking away your own is the way to go?

Besides, that stat by befrienders is skewed.

Those who call, are attention seekers. The ones who commit without calling are the real deal.

  3. Bridge Well …. oops, Bridget Welsh wrote a critical assessment on Najib’s political achievement in PRU13. You can read it here:

My personal view is that she “toed” singapore’s official take, perhaps for a contract renewal.

So against her presumptuous “intellectual analysis”, coupled with Nurul as singapore launch icon, we should expect a political AGENDA in ‘Awakening’.

    • Yes, it’s possible. Either for a contract renewal or for full professorship – she’s only an Associate professor, according to her cv.

She got a BA, Colgate University, 1988. Colgate University?

Did Master’s and PhD in Political Science thereafter. But she must be around 45 years old now. Bit late at Ass Professor stage, isn’t it?

But what criteria to use to determine her eligibility to be a full Professor? When her writings appear biased for the Opposition in Malaysia? And muted in favour of the Government in Singapore – human rights, restrictive laws, Iron Hand rule etc.

  4. big dog………we are all Malaysian doing good for the country , how can you say the opposition is an enemy , they act as checks and balances to the government of the day, unless you are undemocratic type , all are for the betterment for the citizen and country under the Malaysian sun , I guess as a hired hand , you have lost objectivity and impartiality , shame on you…………

  5. Sekurang-kurangnya Tun Lah ade bola untuk letak jawatan kerana gagal pada PRU12 tapu Najib tak de bola !!!

    • Tun Lelah takde pilihan – bukan kerana sifat tanggung jawab. Malaysia menanggung malu di-era pak lelah sebab ada PM kaki tidor.
