Erroneous or Malice?

Pro-Opposition news portal Riong Kali dot com reported that Menteri Besar Kedah Dato’ Paduka Mukhriz Mahathir as saying that the Kedah State Government cannot afford a few thousand Ringgit to gazette historical and archaelogical sites in the state.

Kedah has no money to gazette all temple ruins, says Mukhriz

DECEMBER 06, 2013

The Kedah government does not have enough allocation to gazette all the temple ruins in the state as there were “thousands” of them scattered around, said Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

“There are thousands of temple ruins and if we want to gazette all of them, we need to pay the owner of the land.

“Thousands of ringgit will be needed to do this, and we don’t have that kind of money,” he told reporters at the Putra World Trade Centre where he is attending the Umno general assembly.

“Rome is also built on ruins as well,” he added, referring to the capital of Italy.

As such, Mukhriz said, the state government proposed to only protect temple ruins which had historical value.

In debating the president’s speech yesterday, Kedah Umno representative Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain had said the state would lose a whole state assembly if all the ruins were to be gazetted as heritage sites.

The Tanjung Dawai assemblyman said there were too many of them and they were all over Kedah.

“There are too many temple ruins – by the river, under the house and such. We will lose the whole state assembly if all these were to be gazetted,” he said.

Archeologists had told The Malaysian Insider that the temple ruins in Lembah Bujang which have not been gazetted were being destroyed beginning a few years ago.

The chairman of the NGO Bujang Valley Study Circle, Datuk V Nadarajan, said that the ruins in Lembah Bujang, which were built since the 10th century, were being destroyed without public knowledge. – December 6, 2013.

Mukhriz did not say that is costs thousands of Ringgit to gazette thousands of ruins and historical sites scattered all over the state. In fact, what he actually said was reported by The Malay Mail.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 — Kedah cannot afford to gazette all of its historical ruins, as doing so for thousands of them will allegedly cost the state tens of millions of ringgit, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said today.

According to the Kedah Mentri Besar, residents have built their houses on the sites containing historical ruins, and gazetting the areas will mean displacing the residents.

“That’s why I insist on identifying which ones that are of historical significance. Because there may be thousands there,” Mukhriz told reporters at the sidelines of Umno annual general assembly here.

“If you want to gazette all of them, the act of gazetting means you must pay the owner for the use of their land. So it is going to come down to tens of millions of ringgit which we don’t really have.”

Yesterday, the Umno delegate from Kedah, Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain insisted that one state assembly seat might even be lost if the area containing historical ruins are gazetted.

According to the Tanjung Dawai assemblyman, there are countless of such historical ruins in Kedah.

It is funny how the Riong Kali dot com got it wrong where as those who went to The Malay Mail got it right. It almost could be concluded that Riong Kali dot com journos and editor have the malice intent to make Mukhriz look bad.

Then again, this wasn’t the first time Riong Kali dot com reported erroneously or lied with malice intent. The eve before 146,500 UMNO delegates voted for the post of Vice Presidents and Supreme Council, they reported that Mukhriz sent out 1.2 million SMSes as a last hour campaign. It was intended to make Mukhriz look desperate.

Conveniently, they retracted and apologised. Just like Riong Kali dot com conveniently lie or erroneously report anything and nonchalantly apologise later.

This is really low for a news portal. Unless, they want to known as a habitual lying portal, those in Riong Kali dot com should stop this.
