Concerns on the WSJ story

The Sarawak Report story on money trail back to Prime Minister Najib

The Sarawak Report story on money trail back to Prime Minister Najib

More concerns have been raised about the unsubstatiated WSJ story that close to USD 700million was allegedly credited into Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak’s Ambank account.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin raised his concern on the story which Prime Minister Najib describe as a ‘Political Sabotage’.

Kenyataan Media
YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin
Timbalan Perdana Menteri

Saya berasa amat bimbang dengan pendedahan terkini Wall Street Journal mengenai beberapa akaun peribadi milik YAB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abd.

Sementara siasatan terperinci dijalankan, saya menyeru semua pihak supaya bertenang.

TAN SRI DATO’ HJ MUHYIDDIN HJ MOHD YASSIN
Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia

Like many, Muhyiddin hopes that Prime Minister Najib takes those who are making these slanderous baseless sinister allegations be taken to court.

Despite some media organisations against this notion, lessons could be learnt how Singapore used the court system to redress the lies and inaccurate reporting by media with the intent to slant and demonise.

Mean while Attorney General Tan Sri Gani Patail vowed to do a thorough investigation on this allegation with a special task force comprises MACC, The Police, Bank Negara and AG’s chambers:

  1. The negative perception has been ingrained into the minds of many people after prolonged silence, unconvincing explanation and mis-statement. It would take a long time, and possibly a miracle, to regain the trust and restore the confidence of the people.

The 1MDB saga is akin to a guerilla warfare. Hit with as many allegations as possible, hoping that at least one or two would stick and be damaging enough to the government/ leaders. The truth would definitely take a back seat…

    • Not with the Pasukan Petugas Khas. Four different agencies working on the case.

    • No lah. It is quite straighforward really. Najib fumbled. Macam mana sampai boleh hutang 42 billion, lepas tu tak boleh nak bayar.

This accusation can be 50/50. Suratkhabar bukan boleh percaya sangat. But still, Najib should be accountable for the misadventures of 1mdb.

  3. Tan Sri Muhiyddin statement is a direct statement on his concern that the image of the govt as a whole can be tarnished by such a damning report published by WSJ. I dont think he has sympathy for Najib. Why should he? Too much liability. TMY should lead UMNO and cleanse it of all corrupt leaders. It is the only chance for UMNO to win back the support of Malays stand to rally back to victory in GE14. From where I can see it,.Najib is as good as singing his swan song. The son of the murdered Ambank founder has revealed about transfer of large funds into Najib’s personal account.

  4. UMNO Vice President Shafie Afdal has also raised concern about the expose and claim made by WSJ against Najib.

“This matter must be given serious attention as it involved Najib’s image and credibility as prime minister,” he said in a statement tonight.

He had in the past also said Najib should answer Tun Dr Mahathir who ” asked many questions that needed explanation .., I believe it is not because of the crooked bridge,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan.

UMNO Supreme Council member Ismail Sabri, a strong Najib’s supporter, said, “To me, every accusation must have proof …” But politics is about perception. GE14 is only about 3 years away. The truth may be revealed by the Task Force comprising the four agencies.

    • Malaysian ministers (three of them are Vice Presidents of UMNO) urge Najib to take legal action against WSJ over money transfer allegations, said Singapore Straits Times.

“Najib Razak should take legal action against The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) to clear his name and the country’s image,” the most senior UMNO Vice-President and Minister of Home Affairs Ahmad Zahid said in Teluk Intan.

“Najib should take legal action if the allegations are untrue so that the government leadership will be free of negative perception both in the local and international community,” the next most senior UMNO Vice President and Minister of Rural and Regional Development Shafie Afdal said in a statement yesterday.

He will support the Prime Minister if he sues WSJ, said UMNO Vice President/ Youth Head and Minister of Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin.

Mesti lah. Dah memang sepatut nya DS Najib buat begitu. So’al nya, boleh ke dia? Sanggup ke dia?

  5. And now thestar.com reports that the Special Task Force probes the money trail. “Armed with freshly seized documents,” they are “probing the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) money trail, which allegedly ended in the Prime Minister’s personal bank accounts.”

The Task Force moved into action barely 24 hours after the WSJ report.

But the rakyat’s attention should now be focussed on the money trail. And what UMNO and the Government have to do next. Not on which agency provided the information.

WSJ had earlier said that the report was published based on information from Malaysian investigators. Does not matter which one, because the four agencies are under one team.

It’s stupid of whoever accuses or asks the Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang. He has denied leaking any information to WSJ and Sarawak Report.

“The investigators mentioned in the report certainly did not come from the Auditor-General’s office. It has nothing to do with us,” he said.

  6. Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican is complaining “there has been no clear statement from Bank Negara Malaysia or even AmBank, which was named in the Wall Street Journal allegation ..” WSJ naming them escaped my reading.

“.. and this brings about confusion among the public,” said he, in a statement. But causes of the public confusion are manifold. Not least among them is the lack of responses by various parties concerned when 1MDB became an issue.

He said what is urgently needed is for the central bank and AmBank to clear the air. “Yes, action and legal remedies are good initiatives, however a ‘total image clean up’ must also be done immediately.”

But it is not the norm for banks, far less the Central Bank, to be issuing statements like politicians do. Central Banks the world over are judicious in their words and statements. They, like Bank Negara Malaysia, do it only when there are issues that might affect the stability of the economy, currencies or overall investment climate of the countries concerned.

I disagree with him saying “.. this is the vacuum that must be filled in any effort to deny or clarify.” Actually, the vacuum is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. That which the Task Force comprising the four government agencies are probing.

  7. The following is good news especially after the Thai Police Colonel in charge of the Xavier Justo case was reported saying Justo will be held in Thailand first before other countries can have access or interrogate him:

Our Deputy Home Affairs Minister Junaidi said, “I was informed by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar that Thailand’s Deputy Inspector-General of Police will come to Malaysia to meet his counterpart to discuss permission to interrogate Justo ..”

But Junaidi added that he believed that Thailand would not allow Justo to be brought to Malaysia to face the law in this country until his case is finished in Thailand. This is hopefully what our Dep IGP would negotiate with his counterpart. There must be some goodwill they require of our PDRM in respect of their policing work that could be traded with their goodwill in respect of Justo.

What we should ask for are: access to the info the Thais now have on Justo, Petro-Saudi and 1MDB; access to “interview” Justo on the basis of those; access to Justo as a witness, even if still in Thai custody, for prosecutions made in Malaysia against those committing crimes connected with 1MDB.
