Pua. Preacher. Prevaricator.

DAP Chief Strategist Tony Pua inadvertently risks himself of being a political manipulator and an economic saboteur after admission of introducing Sarawak Report Chief Editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown to the Edge Tong Kooi Ong and Ho Kay Tat.

“Practise what you preach”

1MDB is disappointed to note the admission by Public Accounts Committee (PAC) member YB Tony Pua that he introduced discredited journalist Clare Rewcastle-Brown to Datuk Tong Kooi Ong and Ho Kay Tat of The Edge media group. We further note media reports that YB Tony Pua has not denied knowledge that Clare Rewcastle-Brown was dealing with stolen goods.

In a statement today, YB Tony Pua urged 1MDB to “come clean” on the bond arrangements and guarantee by Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC). We remind YB Tony Pua that the key terms of the bond and the IPIC guarantee are contained in the notes to the 1MDB audited accounts dated 31 March 2013 and 31 March 2014. These are publicly available documents. 1MDB had also provided a detailed answer to the Wall Street Journal report on 9 September 2015, defended its audited accounts and confirmed that it cannot comment on nor have knowledge of, the accounting arrangements of third parties such as IPIC or Aabar.

However, YB Tony Pua is quick to respond to detailed answers with even more questions. One can only conclude he is not at all interested in the answers. We note media reports quoting IGP Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Abu Bakar as saying, in relation to YB Tony Pua, that the police had opened an investigation paper under Section 120 of the Penal Code to probe alleged attempts to topple the government. The IGP is quoted as saying “Mind you, we do not investigate based on newspaper reports… (but) this was what he (Pua) had actually said. As such, we need to call him (in) again. He (Pua) himself had admitted that he had left out a few things when he was first called in. He could have forgotten then. Now only he remembered. So we will call him in.”

We hope YB Tony Pua will “come clean” with his answers to the police.

1MDB has consistently maintained that the appropriate forum to share information is to the lawful authorities investigating 1MDB, including the PAC. It would appear that YB Tony Pua, notwithstanding his role in the PAC, wants to be judge, jury and executioner for 1MDB.

1MDB is disappointed to hear of the alleged actions by YB Tony Pua. Whilst we have had differences of opinion with him, we respected his tenacity and focus. Now that YB Tony Pua is under investigation by the police, we urge YB Tony Pua to practise what he preaches to others and step down from the PAC, while he proves his innocence on the various allegations made against him.

The credibility and integrity of Pua as politician is at stake. His ability to be truthful in the Police investigation would reflect his real attitude about being an honourable politician or a destructive Opposition.

Rewcastle-Brown, Ho and Tooi have all by their own admission to have acquired stolen documents from former Petro Saudi Executive Xavier Justo.

They also conspired to do economic sabotage by rabidly attacking 1MDB and in the same tone, the credibility and integrity of Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak and the Malaysian Goverment.

The intention is very definite; demonise Prime Minister Najib and instigate the masses to rise against the Government with demonstration and disorderly. The net outcome is toppling Prime Minister Najib and UMNO/BN led Government.

This is definitely of conduct unbecoming of a Member of Parliament and a legislator, let alone a member of the Public Accounts Committee.

The MP for Petaling Jaya Utara should do the honourable act of discharging himself from the Parliamentary Select Committee.

Otherwise, Dewan Rakyat should move a motion that this member of the augur house be disbarred from attending anymore sitting.

This is by far the damnest act of an honourable member of public scrutinity organisation which consists of elected representatives of the rakyat.

Pua has brought utter disgrace from the perspective of conspiring to politically topple the Prime Minister, to a body which is supposed to be the last resort as the protector of public spending and accountability.

Red Alert or Red Books?

The planned 'Red Shirt Rally' 16 Sept 2015

The planned ‘Red Shirt Rally’ 16 Sept 2015

It could be something that is more than what meets the eye when the ulterior motive of organising ‘Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu’ planned on 16 September 2015 is not actually the exact objectives what they were outlined to get the event done.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno divisions nationwide have reportedly been invited to join the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu rally on Sept 16.

Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Yunos, one of the advocates of the so-called ‘red shirt’ rally, claimed his division was among those which received an invite.

“The division chiefs have received instructions to go all out to support the rally.

“Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has also given party members the green light to take part, so I am confident that the party machinery will mobilise in full force,” Jamal said when met at PWTC on Wednesday.

He said this when showed a circular, allegedly from Malacca state liaison chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Ab Karim.

The circular, which has been making its rounds on social media, urged each division to mobilise 1,000 members, with all expenses paid by the division itself.

“Yes, we have received a similar letter,” he said.

The group was also seen selling their red T-shirts with the rally logo to members of the public at the entrance of the PWTC building.

Jamal said 5,000 red T-shirts had been sold so far, with a target of 600,000 T-shirts to be sold by Sept 16 nationwide.

He clarified that he was not one of the organisers of the rally, and was merely helping spread the word.

“The organisers are the National Silat Federation (Pesaka). We have been asked to help out,” he said, referring to the more than 250 Malay NGOs said to be taking part in the rally.

He also said that several PAS leaders had expressed an interest in joining the rally, but did not name them.

“I personally received calls from some PAS leaders who said they want to join.

“This is not a political rally, it is non-partisan. Anyone who feels they are Malay are welcome to join us and are free to display their own identity,” he said, adding that the rally participants were free to wear any colour except yellow.

Despite the police not allowing the rally to proceed, Jamal said the group had a right to assemble and would make sure the rally was peaceful.

“What is being spread on social media that the rally will turn violent and there will be bloodshed is a lie. They are just trying to scare the public,” he added.

We have advocated in this blog that we are not all in favour of public rally. Most of all, when it could be antagonising fellow Malaysians, even the minorities, for a cause which the underlying factor is out of spite.

The ‘Red Shirt Rally’ has been seen as a counter-exercise to project force to the Chinese enteric BERSIH 4.0 illegal rally in front of Panggung Dewan Bandaraya on 29-30 August 2015.

The many objectives of the rally were just to guised against true intention of getting the masses to demonstrate to a point of critical mass and topple Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak’s UMNO/BN led Federal Government.

The mitigating elements that points the coercion between Opposition Leaders, pro-Opposition activists and NGOs, the extensive coverage of foreign media and the intensity of the campaign to drum up the support mainly amongst the minority Chinese are very glaring.

Hence, the so called ‘Ultra Malays’ like Sungei Besar UMNO Division Chief Dato’ Jamal Yunos stepped up to initiate and drum up the support of ‘Ultra Malays’ for the ‘Red Shirt Rally’ planned next week to demonstrate the exact opposite of BERSIH 4.0.

We are not sure what this ‘Tit-for-Tat’ rather childish projection of force would accomplish accept to inconvenient and cause discomfort the majority of 4 million Klang valley dwellers around the Greater Klang Valley area.

Police to take action over seditious posts regarding ‘red shirt’ rally

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will not hesitate to take action against individuals found guilty of disseminating racially-charged posts on social media in connection with a planned rally here on Sept 16.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainol Samah said a police report was lodged on Sept 4 in connection with a racially-charged post.

“The post was disseminated on websites such as Facebook, urging people to gather at a few checkpoints around the city before congregating in Bukit Bintang.

“We warn the public against disseminating posts calling for people to join the racially-charged and seditious rally,” he explained.

ACP Zainol also urged the public not to be influenced by calls to join the rally, as doing so would be an offence under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.

“Police have not received a notice from the organisers of the rally.

“We consider this rally illegal if it is held without regard for the law,” he said.

The planned “red-shirt” rally, is organised by a Malay-based non-governmental organisation to be held for 12 hours on Malaysia Day in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, to “counter” the Bersih 4 rally held on Aug 29 and 30.

What is certain, the Police has received a ‘Red Alert’ on the planned 16 September 2015 rally.

However, we are sure that the organiser is not a personality who attracts attention without funny tricks. He has even rode on hyping up a ‘projected’ political event, with the ulterior motive of making economic gains.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — Datuk Jamal Md Yunos could rake in millions of ringgit through the lucky draw he will hold during the “Bersih 4.0” gathering next month, a DAP official said today, suggesting the anti-Bersih trader was exploiting the group for his own gains.
Jamal, who leads the group calling itself “Bersih 4.0”, told reporters on Wednesday that the lucky draw, which offers luxury cars as prizes, is a show of “appreciation” towards those taking part in the on-going protest to demand compensation for alleged losses incurred during the April 28 rally.

But DAP maintained today that Jamal was merely using the “Bersih” name as a marketing strategy to generate millions of ringgit worth of sales and revenue for his Sekinchan Ikan Bakar restaurant in Jalan Pahang as people must spend at least RM50 to take part.

“When studying the terms and conditions (for taking part in the lucky draw), we found that each participant must spend RM50 in a single receipt at the Sekinchan Ikan Bakar restaurant,” said Yew Jia Haur, the secretary for DAP’s Segambut branch, at a press conference here.

“After taking into account operation costs as well as the cost of the BMW offered as the prize, Jamal will generate a gross profit of over RM50.3 million.”
Yew further pointed out that Jamal would generate some additional RM33.8 million from the Lamborghini Gallardo he offered as a second prize.

The competition’s terms and conditions, found on the group’s “Bersih 4.0 Cintakan Keamanan” Facebook page, also stipulates that only the first 150,000 fans to “like” the page would be eligible to win the BMW.

Meanwhile, the first one million fans to “like” the page would be in the running for the Lamborghini.

“This means that if the fans don’t reach 150,000, Jamal has the right to revoke both prizes. He can still gain revenue without even having to give away the car,” said Yew.

As of 1.30pm today, the Facebook page has received 625 “likes”. The lucky draw is expected to take place on June 23, in Stadium Bukit Jalil.

“If Jamal really pulls off this stunt, he will be the only person in the world to make millions from a rally, while Bersih 3.0 organisers face criminal charges and its participants were brutalised and assaulted,” Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said.

“Jamal said he is fighting for the hawkers, but it is clear this (Bersih 4.0) protest will benefit him alone,” he added.

Lim also said Jamal was a “very smart entrepreneur” as the trader would not need to apply for a permit to hold the competition, unless he were to hold a sale in conjunction with it.

Yesterday, Jamal told reporters at a press conference that the Bersih 4.0 group will be visiting Stadium Bukit Jalil on Monday to obtain clearance to set up stalls outside the stadium for the June 23 gathering.

The Anti-Bersih traders also said they will sue the organisers of last month’s Bersih 3.0 rally, claiming it caused them “extensive” financial losses.

On Thursday, 60-odd traders clad in “Bersih 4.0” T-shirts cancelled their plans to set up stalls in front of Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan’s residence, saying the upcoming June 23 gathering to be held at Stadium Bukit Jalil will be used to push their “message of peace” and rejection of “Bersih 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.”

When asked how petty traders could afford to come up with luxury cars for the June 23 event, Jamal said: “As individuals we do have losses but when we unite we can give out these gifts no matter how many million ringgit.

Earlier in the week, the federal government announced it is suing the steering committee of Bersih 2.0 for damages amounting to RM122,000 that it asserts was the result of the April 28 rally organised by the electoral reform movement.

The 10 Bersih leaders, spearheaded by Ambiga, are the first people to be sued for damages under the Peaceful Assembly Act, less than a month after the new law aimed at allowing public gatherings “in accordance with international norms” was enforced.

The April 28 rally that saw tens of thousands gather at six different locations before heading to Dataran Merdeka was peaceful but turned chaotic when riot police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters after a police barricade at the square was breached.

There rumours about Jamal could be in not so rosy bed of romantic reds, with regards to his ‘Sekinchan Ikan Bakar’ business.

There are further rumours that he has defaulted MARA on the business loan he took up for the ‘Sekinchan Ikan Bakar’, which was at one time being franchised.

Hence, the ability to drum up such event would probably score red notches amongst some Ministers and could defer any actions being taken against Jamal for the said loan.

Never the less, two wrongs don’t make anything right.
