Mukhriz’s Musical Chair

PPBM Deputy President Dato’ Seri Mukhriz Mahathir woke up to reality that he no longer enjoy the support and stardom which include the Alumni lead when he received no nomination for the upcoming AGM where there is a Central Committee election.

When nomination closed at 500pm, Alumni of Maktab Rendah Sains MARA students (ANSARA) Secretary General Ahmad Bazlan Che Kassim announced that Mukhriz as the incumbent President reviewed no nomination.

Out of 22 different MRSM Alumni chapters which formed ANSARA, nominations for the President post where only made for ANSARA Deputy President Harun Aminurashid Malek, who is Kuantan chapter and Dato’ Kamarul Redzuan, who is Kota Bahru chapter

Several ANSARA chapters who were said to be “Mukhriz friendly” also did not nominate him.

It was said that Mukhriz is no longer interested to defend his seat, because of “Overstaying his welcome”.

Then again, the writing is on the wall. February last year he resigned as MB Kedah when he lost the majority support of BN ADUNs of Kedah State Assembly and UMNO Kedah leaders.

He was then summarily sacked from UMNO.

Mukhriz who joined a dissent party which is now part of Opposition pact Pakatan Harapan, is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Deputy President. He is also Vice Chairman of Pakatan Harapan.

In ANSARA AGM September last year, he was suggested to “Take a leave if absence until an AGM where there is election for Central Committee” but Mukhriz rejected the proposition.

The Star story:

Mukhriz’s helming of alumni body questioned

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has come under pressure to “take leave” as president of Ansara, an NGO he has headed for more than 22 years.

The call for Mukhriz to step aside came from one of his former ardent supporters, Zakhir Mohamed, who is better known by his blogging nom de plume “Bigdog”.

Ansara is the association of former Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) students and is reputed to be the biggest alumni body in Malaysia, given that thousands of Malay students have passed through the 47 MRSM colleges.

Zakhir made the call during Ansara’s annual general meeting on Sunday at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The former Kedah mentri besar is now with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia which has joined forces with the Opposition.

Zakhir, who spoke towards the end of the AGM, made a veiled critique of Mukhriz’s opening speech which asked Ansara to be the agent of change and to uphold integrity.

He said that Mukhriz was putting Ansara in a difficult situation now that he is a leading Opposition figure.

“Ansara tries to be apolitical but it has been our practice to be supportive of the Government which put us here. By wearing the Opposition hat, he has compromised the interests of our association,” said Zakhir.

He claimed he had received support from alumni members for speaking up.

“I received messages saying this was the right time for a change because he is no longer with the Government and that Ansara needs someone more dynamic,” said Zakhir.

Former Ansara vice-president Datuk Sazmi Miah, who attended the same MRSM as Mukhriz in Kelantan, said it was unnecessary for Mukhriz to resign because he had never used the association to make political statements or to attack the Government.

Sazmi said attempts to push Mukhriz out were politically motivated.

However, an Ansara member and CEO of a government-linked corporation said Ansara was closely associated with the Government and that ministers often attended its programmes.

He said members were right to be concerned about the future direction of Ansara under an Opposition figure.

However, he said that any move to remove the president should be decided by the members.

**************

Tun Dr. Mahathir reacted emotionally with name-calling, quite quickly after the AGM.

Now that even amongst brethren of ANSARA Mukhriz failed to be convinced his value and worthiness to continue as a leader, it is unsure how ‘the market’ will react to him as an Opposition leader.

It is very interesting since PPBM is trying to portray itself as playing the primary role in challenging and capturing UMNO seats in the upcoming 14GE.

UMNO is the party with the most seats in Dewan Rakyat, which is 87 out of 132 BN seats. PPBM enjoys only a single seat.

So far, there has been rebellion within PPBM in the likes of founding member Kamarul Ariffin, Hamidah Osman and Ainina Saaduddin. They claimed of “Nepotism, favouritism and undemocratic practices” within the party.

ANSARA Secretary General Bazlan is also the solicitor representing Ainina and PPBM Chairman Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in various cases pertaining to politics and the challenge against Prime Minister Najib.

Mukhriz senior aide as MB Kedah Ahmad Faisal Azumu is PPBM Chairman for Perak.

It is interesting to carefully watch Mukhriz’s ability to progress, considering he did not get far with UMNO. For the record, he lost the bid for UMNO Youth Chief in 2009 and Vie President in 2013.

Now that the ANSARA dominion has spoken, there is lesser seats left as the music draws nearer to come to an end.
