Achehnese ‘David’ trying to slay a Giant

A political novice is banking on his Achehnese roots clout around Jerai and Yan and hoping to unseat against an incumbent, who had served the constituents well.

Newbie Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi is challenging incumbent Mej. Jen. (Rtd.) Dato’ Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, who is the Minister-in-charge for Religious Affairs, for the Jerai Parliamentary seat.

“Abang Jamil is very popular here. He has been very diligent attending and serving all mosques and suraus in Jerai for four years, without ever talking about politics”, said Dato’ Boey Chin Gan.

Boey is contesting for the N22 Gurun DUN seat as the BN candidate.

Akhramsyah is a High Council member of PPBM, the party formed by disgruntled and rejected UMNO leaders and members led by Fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, sacked Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and sacked MB Kedah Dato’ Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.

Boey, who is a likeable personality around Jerai like Mej. Jen. (Rtd) Jamil, was Mukhriz’s MCA Adviser when he was contesting for the Ayer Hitam DUN seat in the last GE.

It is unlikely that the folks around Jerai whose lives centred around the communal mosques and suraus would decide for Akhramsyah instead of “Abang Jamil”.

Akhramsyah, a Chemical Engineering graduate from Imperial College and was a career Shell man, never did well in mainstream politics nor blogging.

He vied for UMNO Youth Exco in 2009 and failed miserably. In the absence of a good grassroots machinery, it makes it quite difficult for him to convince the Jerai folks to reject Mej. Jen (Rtd) Jamil.

“It is very weird to see Akhramsyah using the ‘Black Eye’ (PKR) logo!”, A political analyst’s observation on the first born of late Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, since both of them are notorious for their anti-Anwar Ibrahim stance.

It is clear the ‘Flip-Flop’ would not resonate well with the traditional Jerai voters.
