PETALING JAYA: Bowing to the mounting pressure from within his party, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced his decision to step aside from his role of Umno president.

“Based on the struggle faced by the party today, I have decided to entrust the deputy president (Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan) the tasks of the president,” he said.

Ahmad Zahidi, who is facing a number of graft charges in court, said that he felt the concerns of some Umno leaders who are worried that they might feel the pressure, or be investigated with allegations he has faced.

“To strengthen the party, and in the interest of all, Member of Parliament and assemblymen, necessary measures need to be taken,” he said in a statement released on Tuesday (Dec 18) night.

Dr Ahmad Zahid also called on MPs and assemblymen not to jump ship.

Mohammad, who was a banker by profession and a successful corporate leader, would be defending his DUN Rantau seat after Election Court declared the announcement of his win uncontested on 14GE 9 May 2018 as null and void.

The former Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan won the recent party election as the Deputy President defeating MP Ketereh Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

It is likely Zahid would still remain as the Opposition Leader since he is the democratically elected Leader of the largest Opposition party in Dewan Rakyat.

The Bagan Datuk MP currently is facing 46 charges, which many considered to be a very cunning political manoeuvre to weaken UMNO.

In the hour long forum from Level 4 Auditorium at Menara Dato Onn, Putra World Trade Centre, Zahid also explained the recent misconception about UMNO co-operating with traditional enemy DAP.

The announcement of the leave of absence is seen as Zahid differentiating his personal issues from the burden of perception in doing his duties as the President.

His message for the party to be strengthened is the demonstration of the courage of an elected leader of his command and duty over his own affairs, upon to manage to rise at the top in a party of three million members and over twenty two thousand branches.

He succeeded the Leadership of UMNO and Barisan Nasional in the worst position of 59 years of general election history and experience.
