The election of Dato’ Azhar “Art” Azizan @ Harun as the Speaker of the XIV Parliament has it precedence from the election of immediate past Speaker Tan Sri Mohamed Ariff Mohamad Yusoff.
Upon the XIV Parliament being established on 8 June 2018 after the historical 14GE on 9 May 2018, the only nominated candidate of the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat automatically assumed the position and job in the absence of another candidate.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin nominated Azhar to replace Arif, which coincidentally was out voted by 111-109 in the order of items when the current sitting convened on Monday 13 July 2020.
Art was a practicing barrister before appointed as Chairman of the Election Commission.
The Opposition, namely MPs of Pakatan Harapan were quick to manifest their natural disrespect of authority including the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat.
Speaker Art Harun summarily ejected Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad, who was rudely interrupting the former’s maiden address to the House.
It is expected that Opposition MPs continue to act and behave rudely and gross disrespect to the decorum, for their political stunts through remaining of the XIV Parliament sittings.
Work to strengthen the current Perikatan Nasional Government, led by the tri-factor PPBM-UMNO-PAS and other parties, GPS, BN and Sabah parties is the most formidable and effective Malay executive leadership in half a century, should be systematically carried out and move towards the betterment of the Malay unification.

Bilangan, perpecahan parti Melayu, Islam berkurang, Bersatu terbubar
Beliau memberi empat alasan:
1. TS Muhyiddin tidak mengkhianati UMNO kerana beliau tidak meninggalkan parti, sebaliknya dipecat.
2. Ia akan mengukuhkan parti terbesar orang Melayu itu;
The combination and compromise of the Malay parties, which could be seen as a progression of Muafakat Nasional, a tight cooperation between UMNO and PAS inked on 10 Sept 2019 and already proven very encouraging and productive political results.
It could be taken a step further beyond the loose-cooperation of the Perikatan Nasional Government formed on 29 Feb 2020 after the self destruction of the Pakatan Harapan Government.
The last four months, the Perikatan Nasional Government of UMNO-PAS-PPBM and GPS, have proven against odds to get the country up and running again weathering through a global humanity crisis of the Covid-19 Pandemic and the global economic downturn that came with it.
The reunification of Malay power is key to take this further. Of course it would come with a series of compromise and restructuring of organisations.
The history of the Malays in power is about concession, compromise and restructuring and syndication of roles and stature.
When the British wanted a post WWII grasp of British Malaya hence the establishment of the Malayan Union on 1 April 1946 and reduced near absolute the power, position and role of the Malay Rulers, the common Malays rose and organise themselves through UMNO and vehemently reject this colonisation program to a point it failed miserably.
Then that got the British, represented by High Commissioner Edward Gent and the Malay Rulers to sit down and negotiate the structure to replace the Malayan Union.
UMNO was invited into these negotiations as observers and advisers to the Malay Rulers.
The Treaty of Malaya was inked on 21 Jan 1948 and came into effect on 1 Feb 1948 where the Federation of Malay States (Malaya) was born. The Treaty of Malaya later became the fundamental basis of the Constitution of the Federation Malaya as a sovereign nation, from 31 August 1957.
The mainstay of power in the hands of the Malays by no means and intent to deny the rights of others and/or impose them into being assimilated as a Malay.
The past two thousand years of history, especially the coastal trading nations, the Malays have proven themselves to be tolerant, accommodating and inclusive their nation building ways.
History has proven time and again that the amalgamations and consolidations with concessions made and comprise develop the civilisation into a more effective, productive and powerful force, be it commercially, political, diplomatic or military might.
Hence for the Malay central core powers to get together, sort out their difference, compromise and consolidate is a strategic move to move forward for the better of the Malays and the nation, hand-in-hand.
The compromise would be very painful too some but deemed necessary to move along and forward. Then again in the words of a social scientist and nationalist Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Nordin Kardi, who became a Vice Chancellor of two separate Unis, “Perjuangan itu tiada erti tanpa pengorbanan”.
Of course to amalgamate and consolidate the Malays into a single column of political and administrative force with require many degrees of compromise and syndication of existing structures.
That is the challenge and price, for the Malays to come as one and under a single mother three. This three would be a big three and strong roots below, where everyone to find protection under it as well reap the fruits of it.
Now or within the next three months is the best time for the 15th General Election (15GE)

Umno No 2 calls for fresh elections, cites Perikatan’s slim parliamentary majority as reason
Wednesday, 01 Jul 2020 10:13 PM MYT
BY YISWAREE PALANSAMY
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Malaysia should go to the polls soon, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said tonight in a “live” broadcast on the Umno Online Facebook page.
The Rantau assemblyman said the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government—of which Umno is a partner—is in a very fragile state due to its slim majority in Parliament, adding that because of this, the alliance is “under constant threat”.https://tpc.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html?n=0
“For me, the Perikatan National government is a government which has a very slim majority. With a government like this, it is difficult for us to table policies in Parliament, because it [the government] is always under constant threat, and as I said, under siege.
“We as the government now, I, as someone from the party representing the government. I say that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has not much choices, because for me, I feel he too wants to see a new mandate. Otherwise, [he has] to get up every morning to see whether or not I still have my seats.
“We cannot afford to have a government like that. What more when people see, they would think what kind of country is this,” Mohamad said.
He added that Muhyiddin’s popularity rating as prime minister is currently high but won’t last long, given the government’s position now.
“Who would want to invest in a country where its [government] majority is too slim? That’s why I say we cannot wait long,” Mohamad said during the Kabor Chini talk show.
He also said that in the current situation, it would not be a difficult task for the Opposition to vote down policies.
“So what is the best way is to get a renewed mandate? I trust the people are able to evaluate,” he added.
At about the same time as Mohamad’s talk was livestreamed, Muhyiddin released a statement on his Facebook page expressing confidence that he holds the majority political support in the country, amid the Opposition’s attempts for an ouster.
The Bersatu president said the heads of 12 political parties attended a meeting in Putrajaya earlier and expressed support for his informal PN alliance.
Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali who is currently partyless, was listed as present at the meeting as the PN chief whip alongside Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as Bersatu secretary-general.

The Malaysian Government under Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Md Yassin for the past four months did very well to control here in Malaysia the global crisis of Covid-19 Pandemic.
This include the Special Aide worth RM250b in various stimulus packages to brace the impact of global economic downturn and later recovery in some of the critical sectors.
RM20b in cash have been dished to the much needed B40 and lower M40 and SME/Is.
However, the full brunt of the global economic downturn has not been fully realised and braced by Malaysians at microcosm level.
After all, the Opposition is at its lowest ebb as a pact, with amongst themselves not quite organised and the motley crew is in a helter skelter mode after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad impulsively and summarily resigned a little over four months ago, mainly over the issue of ‘succession plan’.
The twelve Presidents of Perikatan Nasional met yesterday was a sign that they are preparing for the 15GE within short to medium term.

PRESS STATEMENT ON COVID PANDEMIC
2 JULY 2020
“Hope for the best, do our best but prepare for the worst”
By Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah
Member of Parliament1) Based on news reports, the Covid pandemic is of a global scale that seems frightening. More than 10 million people in the world are now infected and more than 500,000 people have died so far. The figures are still rising fast in many parts of the world. The known infections are based on those who have been tested positive. The real numbers could be many times higher since many infected people are known to have little or no signs (pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic) of Covid-19. 2) According to numerous news reports, this deadly virus (which is still mutating) attacks the victims’ immunity system (like Aids), cause blood clot and multi-organ failure, not just the lungs. New studies have shown that this virus also attacks the testicles of young males and causes heart attacks on young people. Patients who have recovered are not immune and can be re-infected. Some patients have reported having symptoms for three months. Many doctors and health officialsdo not know what else to expect next. 3) The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned on 26 June 2020 that millions of people could die in a second wave of infections which might have already started in other countries.4) WHO compared the current Covid pandemic with the Spanish Flu pandemic (caused by a H1N1 virus) of 1918/19 which infected more than 500 million people in a global population of 1.5 billion people then and which killed 50 million to 100 million people. The tragedy was that they could not find a vaccine. Eventually, most countries developed “herd immunity” to overcome the pandemic the “natural way”but with a huge human & economic cost.5) The last pandemic, the Swine Flu of 2009, by another strain of H1N1, which started in Mexico and US and affected most pig rearing countries, infected 1.4 billion people worldwide and killed between 151,700 to 575,400 people around the world. A vaccine was found 6 months after the initial outbreak and the pandemic ended. 6) 2002/2003 SARS was only a small outbreak infecting 8,098 and killed 774 people. All the infected patients of SARS, unlike Covid-19, had clear symptoms so it was easy to identify and isolate them and control the infections.7) When a disease reaches an epidemic or pandemic proportion, only a workable vaccine could end it, otherwise like the Spanish Flu, the cost to human lives & suffering and economic devastation would be colossal. 8) Nature, via natural selection, has its own ways of eliminating the “inefficient” viruses. This novel coronavirus, which is still mutating, seems to be “super-efficient” in infecting, harming and hiding from detection. Only a vaccine can end the pandemic. The statement by the Government on 27 June 2020 that a vaccine is needed to resolve this pandemic, is welcome news.9) Social measures (social distancing, wearing face mask, use of hand sanitisers, etc.) are only meant to contain and control the infections and to buy time for us until a vaccine is found. The social measures cannot end the pandemic. For a still largely un-automated and un-digitised “brick & mortar” economy like ours based mainly on agriculture, manufacturing and construction, social measures (based on studies reported) also have negative and harmful side effects, and are not sustainable on a long term basis. For example, social distancing presents a problem in early and primary education where close human interaction is required and it also disrupts most of our productive processes. Over-use of face mask can cause a lack of oxygen and too much carbon dioxide which can be harmful. Too much usage of hand sanitisers can cause skin problems. 10) We should ensure that those who are most vulnerable (poor, sick, disable, unemployed people, etc.) are not neglected or being sidelined in any way from any forms of aids. Compassionate considerations must be given to such vulnerable groups when implementing the social measures. 11) The Government and its relevant agencies have so far done a good job in using social measures to keep the infections low and under control. The Government has also done well in providing the healthcare and treatment needed for infected patients of Covid-19. Our frontline healthcare workers havedone a marvelous job here and should be roundly applauded.12) Despite the low infection rates at the moment but with our porous borders and millions of foreign workers and mostcitizens not tested yet, it is possible that there could be countless people out there who could be infected and who may be asymptomatic. This point is merely a word of caution. We really do not know the actual situation until enough tests are done. The US CDC has just announced that for every infected person detected in the USA, there are at least 10 more infected people who are undetected, meaning as many as 27 million people in the USA could be infected today. The Government agencies concerned should test as many people as possible and to learn more from other countries on the contact tracing system with those tested positive.13) We should be honest and realistic with ourselves and while we should do our best, we should not be too concerned about having zero cases of infections. Of course, it is most welcomed if we achieve zero cases, but it may not be sustainable until a vaccine is found and based on point 12above. Based on news reports, Beijing had zero cases of Covid-19 for 56 days until there was 1 new case on 10 June 2020 and by 14 June 2020, they had 51 new cases. New Zealand, a secluded island of 5 million people, after 24 days of zero cases, reported 2 new cases on 17 June 2020. 14) The Government’s main responsibility is to continue to ensure that agreed social measures (SOP) are being implemented appropriately, provide adequate healthcare & treatment and to prepare the country for future waves ofinfections.15) Until a workable vaccine is found, we have to find the right balance on the social measures needed to control future infections and how to carefully open up our damaged economy to stop the internal hemorrhage. The Government has stated that tourism (worst hit sector), has suffered a loss of RM 45 billion in the first half of this year. The Government has also warned of RM 1 trillion losses caused by a collapse of the banking and financial system if the economy is not open up soon enough. This is the greatest challenge today for our country (and other countries) to address.16) Since the only way to end this ‘silent genocide’ is to find avaccine and we do not have any local expertise in this area and in view of the global geo-politics & pharma-politics of Covid vaccines, our government and the banking & financial sector (for the sake of its own survival) should do much more to support, assist and facilitate any genuine private sector initiatives in finding and securing a workable vaccine from reputable sources overseas. Most vaccine developments overseas are undertaken by private sector biotech firms.17) As we are still sailing in unchartered waters and we should learn as much as possible from the measures undertaken in other countries. We should also not take anything for granted and be open and innovative in exploring any viable ideasneeded. We need a holistic integrated approach, including protecting nature and environment, to deal with this deadly and devastating pandemic.18) This pandemic is too important for our country’s survival to be politicized by any quarters. I would like to call upon all parties, all sectors and the public to support the government of the day in managing this crisis equitably for all. Our country needs to be united and coordinated in facing thismost dangerous and invisible threat to our very existence.

In preparation of the 15GE, for PN to work is the separation of seats contested and no over lapping contest or it would just benefit the Opposition in a three or more corner fights.
Hence, the parties within PN would be squabbling for seat allocations.
UMNO should be stern about putting the Baseline down. The seats won on 14GE bt 10 May 2018 should be the Baseline.
Anything out of those constituencies can be negotiated and allocated amongst the twelve PN parties.
What is interesting is that UMNO and PAS inked the Muafakat Nasional charter Sept last year and already got their technical discussions in motion, which include seat allocations.
Another interesting point is that UMNO has still the best and extensive political machinery structure, with more than 22,000 branches.
The past five by-elections with Extraordinary performance in Tanjung Piai is a testimony that UMNO, together as MN, is political force to be reckoned with.
Interesting to note, all under the BN-Dacing symbol.
After all, UMNO has proven through the past sixty five years they have been very consistent in the policies and struggle and managed the nation quite well. That has been manifested by the development brought, compounding growth and maintaining stability of the nation, rakyat and economy, admist many rounds of challenges.
Hence, UMNO should be mother-tree in the orchard of many fruit trees where benefits can be harvested and enjoyed by all.
Former political secretary to Fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Matthias Chang, lambasted his former Boss on the recent most attempt to ‘political coup’ to use the upcoming Parliament sitting to oust Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin.
Matthias Chang:
Dear Good People (MP)
We have arsehole politicians still lusting for power doing their utmost to topple our PM and bring chaos to the country.
Bluntly, I will say they are all a bunch of filthy scumbags!
Shafee Apdal’s motion for a resolution of confidence is for all intent and purposes a No Confidence motion against PM.
Tun M using the backdoor vehicle of Apdal’s (why they like to play the backside), is desperately trying to show that he can command more confidence than PM.
IT SHOWS THAT THE ARSEHOLE LAWYERS, JUDGES (RETIRED OR CURRENT) AND WHOSOEVER ADVISING BY THE BACKDOOR, ARE NOT CONFIDENT OF A MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE AGAINST PM SUCCEEDING (BEING A NEGATIVE AND AN INSULTING TACTIC). ARROGANCE!
SO, BY COUCHING A MOTION OF CONFIDENCE FOR A IRRELEVANT POLITICIAN WHO HAS EXCEEDED HIS SHELF LIFE (EXPIRED) THEY ARE MERELY PLAYING ON INFANTILE EMOTIONS THAT MPs SHOULD GIVE FACE TO A “HAS BEEN”.
BUT THIS MAN (WHOSE POLITICAL SHELF-LIFE HAS EXPIRED) COULD NOT EVEN BE BOTHERED TO SAVE OUR LIVES, AS EVIDENT BY HIS SPEECH REGARDING THE USELESS RM20 BILLION STIMULUS. NOT A WORD ON SAVING OUR LIFE AND DEFEATING COVID 19.
THIS IS THE BANKRUPTCY OF THE PH GOONS STILL LUSTING FOR POWER.
HATE TO SAY IT. THIS IS THE UGLY, FILTHY WAY IN WHICH A SET OFF MALAY LEADERS ARE WILLING TO LAUNCH A COUP FOR THEIR SELFISH POWER INTERESTS AGAINST A MALAY LEADER FIGHTING FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY AND TO UPLIFT THE MALAYS, BEING THE MAJORITY ARE SUFFERING MASSIVE UNEMPLOYMENT AND FINANCIAL DEVASTATION.
Champions, these scumbags are not, but TRAITORS TO THEIR OWN RACE, RELIGION, CULTURE AND COUNTRY.
MAY THEY ROT IN HELL.

The message through socmed platform is after the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Mohamad Arif Md Yusof replied a letter by Sabah Chief Minister who is also MP for Semporna Dato Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal’s request for a motion to challenge Prime Minister Muhyiddin’s appointment.
At the moment, the Government operates without having to pander into the intricacies of democracy which in the times of crisis, works and quite effective.
Allowing the ramblings and childish bickering of democratic debates in this juncture of global crisis would hinder all the efforts of everything concentrated on survival mode.
It is interesting that it is believed an MP wrote in for a motion of that MP of Langkawi still command the confidence of the majority of the House, in the upcoming sitting.
The latter is the same MP who irresponsibly resigned as the Prime Minister on 24 Feb 2020 and the compulsive dissolution the previous Government, as part of his dark game of politics.
This is not at all the ‘Parliamentary and Electoral Reforms’ that were promised in Pakatan Harapan’s Manifesto is constructive and bring the nation forward but pandering into it would drag Her into far complicated game of politics and cyclical politicking by unscrupulous politicians.
However, if this is another cunning political game by Dr Mahathir to strategically strengthen the position of Prime Minister Muhyiddin and eventually as a quid pro quo for getting him back into centre-field of politics and absolve the former from the mistakes the past four years, generally dominated by the Malays, then it is truly “Ugly, Filthy Way”.
In the complexity of the permutation of recent developments of the ‘Semburit Gate’ where the IGP is nonchalant on the report made, investigations and statements issues, statements made and stance taken by PKR and Gerontocracy Prime Minister’s own worries emitting from it, it is best laid simplistic clear:
Malaysiakini story:
DAP rep: Azmin should realise he doesn’t stand chance of becoming PM
(Updated)
DAP’s Sungai Pelek assemblyperson Ronnie Liu(photo, above)said PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali should realise he does not stand a chance of becoming prime minister over PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
This, he said, is because the majority faction in PKR, as well as Amanah and DAP, backs Anwar as the next prime minister.
He added that Anwar has been agreed upon by Pakatan Harapan as the person to succeed Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad but Azmin being the “blue-eyed boy” of Mahathir had led to widespread speculation that there was a plot to make Azmin prime minister instead of Anwar.
“This much is true. Anwar might not be Mahathir’s favourite but he is the choice of PKR (at least the majority faction within that party), DAP and Amanah.
“Even if some Bersatu and PKR members were to rally behind Azmin, they would still not be the majority within Pakatan. Not even close.
“So, I don’t think Azmin has any chance of becoming prime minister. He should realise this,” he said in a statement.
Liu said it was possible for Bersatu to grow quickly if there were massive crossovers from Umno and PAS and they could theoretically back Azmin, but that was unlikely to happen anytime soon.
The DAP lawmaker said Mahathir should quell any uncertainty by setting a timeline to hand over power to Anwar.
“Mahathir should accept that and therefore do more to assure everyone that he is going to stick to the agreed plan
“It’s not enough for him to keep saying he will do so. He needs to give a precise timeline.
“Once a fixed timeline is announced, and everything suddenly becomes more concrete, we should see the end of internecine warfare within PKR,” he said.
Liu said a stable PKR is important for Harapan’s own stability that is important for the economy.
“This will also help to ensure that BN will not come back to power in the next elections,” he said.
The rift between Anwar and Azmin has widened following a sex video implicating the latter.
Anwar had said Azmin should resign if the sex video is proven to be true while Azmin’s allies have accused Anwar’s faction of having a hand in the creation of the video.

Last night Gerontocracy Prime Minister’s presence and call at the PKR Pow-Wow on President Anwar “Mat King Leather” Ibrahim’s own turf with the obvious absence of Deputy President Azmin Mohamed Ali and leaders aligned to the latter, is very telling.
Reports by RAZAK AHMAD, SIRA HABIBU, ZAKIAH KOYA, AIDA AHMAD, M. KUMAR, HANIS ZAINAL, MEI MEI CHU and ASHLEY TANG
PETALING JAYA: Top PKR leaders, including 15 MPs as well as 21 members of its central leadership council, did not show up at a party retreat that was meant to mend the rift between certain factions and also iron out problems brewing within the party.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad attended the opening night of the retreat at Anwar’s invitation.
Other leaders who did not attend were those deemed to be Azmin allies, among them vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin, women’s wing chief Haniza Talha, and youth wing deputy chief Muhammad Hilman Idham.
While some said they had to attend to other matters in their ministerial capacity, MPs claimed that they had already planned to return to their constituencies.
A few others said they did not think that the retreat comprising all PKR leaders would be focused enough to craft solutions for the party’s current problems.
In recent days, the gap has widened between the Anwar and Azmin camps after the former said that the latter should resign from the Cabinet if it was proven he was indeed the man in a viral sex video.
Azmin rebuked Anwar by stating that his party president “should look into the mirror”.
A group of 24 central leadership council members then signed a statement on Thursday to rebuke Anwar for telling Azmin to resign, while six of 14 state party chiefs signed another statement yesterday in support of their president.
Foreign Minister and leadership council member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, who was part of the group that rebuked Anwar, said he was meeting his counterpart in Jakarta last night and had a packed schedule.
Party vice-president Tian Chua said he did not go last night but would attend the retreat today.
“Some of us will attend partially – there is no concerted effort to not to attend the retreat,” he said.
Chua said the idea of the retreat was mooted about three months ago by the top leaders to resolve differences within the party.
The PKR elections late last year that went on for three months saw much mudslinging between the camps of former Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, allegedly under the auspices of Anwar, and Azmin.
Rafizi lost the elections but was later appointed a vice-president.
Fellow vice-president Zuraida said she could not attend the retreat because she needed to attend the World Firefighters’ Day at Dataran Merdeka today and that she would be flying to Surabaya tomorrow.
“I have other things to do. I have firefighting of a different kind.
“People can make insinuations as to why I did not go.
“I received the invitation more than a month ago,” said Zuraida, who is also Housing and Local Government Minister.
As for Haniza, she could not attend the PKR retreat but said she had tried “to free her schedule”.
“As usual, many programmes happen during the weekend and I have to settle things before leaving for Surabaya on Sunday,” said Haniza, who is Lembah Jaya assemblyman in Selangor.
Haniza said she would be with Zuraida in Surabaya to visit a successful public housing programme.
“The PKR retreat is not actually a retreat because all the branch leaders from all states will be present as well,” she said.
A PKR central leadership council member who is also an MP said he was staying away to send a strong message to the prime minister-in-waiting, Anwar.
“When issues are especially critical within PKR and there is a need for an intense discussion with focus groups comprising the top leadership of the party, he holds a retreat calling everyone – a mixture of legislators and grassroots leaders from all levels,” said the MP who declined to be named.
He said such a gathering with no focus groups would offer no solutions for the party even if everyone were to be holed up for a week.
Gerontocracy Prime Minister message on the ‘Night With The Long Faces’ is abundantly clear: sort ourselves out or we would be phased out.
Utusan Malaysia story:
– BERNAMA

That is quite mild considering that the internal problems within Pakatan Harapan, like rumblings in the interior of PKR, DAP and more and more prevailing, PPBM, isn’t damning to them as quite how they fare in the performance as Federal and State Governments and meeting the rakyat’s expectation.
Never mind the complete non delivery of the Manifesto Pakatan Harapan.
The mumbo-jumbo of incoherent administration with serious flaws of:
1. Political stability and political will and direction
2. Decision making process, decisions made and the follow through of the policies and decisions made
3. Implementation of on going and new policies, which often is incoherent and mechanically, unorchestrated
4. The compulsion of lies and spins PH leaders habitually do, for their sordid political expediency
All and sundry, the general Malaysian public’s confidence is eroding away. Even amongst the idealistic.
Gerontocracy Prime Minister’s Party Chief Strategist opined that the ‘Semburit- Gate’ is a conniving ‘Game of Thrones’.
Malaysiakini story:
For good governance, not a never-ending ‘Game of Thrones’
Rais Hussin (Updated)
COMMENT| The whole goal of being in politics is to be in power.
In Malaysia, small as it is in terms of population, the people involved in the political arena have taken politics beyond the threshold of what can now be known as the never-ending ‘Game of Thrones’ over who will be the next prime minister.
The irony is that this was known before the 14th general election that it would be the chink in Pakatan Harapan’s armour going into battle with the then-formidable BN, especially Umno.
Therefore, all key members of Harapan, without fail, named Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister-in-waiting, once Dr Mahathir Mohamad became the prime minister – as the latter himself preferred then and prefers now.
For the lack of a better term, the politics of Harapan should not have had to experience what one is witnessing now in Malaysia, with the economic affairs minister taking the charge of the light brigade to go against his own party president.
There are five strategic dangers to be wary of with the perpetual quest for the office of the prime minister, will upend New Malaysia as we know it, playing in the background.
First and foremost, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak (photo) is biding for time. He has even returned as the chairperson of the BN advisory board.
Even Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has resurfaced from his garden leave. In other words, the proverbial heads of snakes can still bite, even when detached from their bodies.
BN and PAS are looming large. They don’t even have to do anything concrete and serious to gain electoral support come the 15th general election.
Harapan can be thoroughly defeated, which will allow the kleptocrats and their ilk to make a quick comeback and deliver acoup de grâceagainst what Malaysians voted for last May – a clean and competent government.
Second, Malaysia has a bureaucracy of some 1.5 million civil servants across the thirteen states. They should be nonpartisan and have sworn to be nonpartisan.
But when the Harapan government cannot operate in tandem with what has been promised to the people, or in accordance with theelection manifesto, then the civil servants will not ride above the parapet to serve the people.
They will watch at the sidelines, quietly, perhaps sheepishly, to find out who will win the ‘Game of Thrones’ first before deciding to work. In other words, this will not only legitimise these civil servants’ seeing, hearing and saying no evil, but will render them dysfunctionally neutral.
This is turn will lead to self-inflicted harm on the political economy of Malaysia. There are more than 900 GLCs that command up to 70 percent of the equities or financial weight in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE).
When the civil service does not work actively to enhance the welfare of the people, the GLCs cannot work in tandem with the government to produce the necessary deliverables.
The net outcome is a slow paralysis of ‘Malaysia Inc’, where corporate fat cats who have already cashed out prior to the conclusion of the last general election just need to wait for the government to collapse so that the wheel of fortune can turn again to their favourite group of politicians.
Perpetual one-upmanship
Fourth, if the never-ending ‘Game of Thrones’ continues unabated, with or without any reference to the sex video – which has been proven to beauthenticby the inspector-general of police himself – international investors would prefer to place their bets on and in other countries.
Cambodia and Laos are two of the fastest rising economies in Southeast Asia with a growth rate of 6.9 and 7.1 percent respectively. Their currencies are semi-pegged to the US dollar, and their financial backers are China. Why should the international business community take Malaysia seriously?
They won’t when there is a perpetual game of one-upmanship to dethrone Anwar, the anointed successor of Mahathir.
Finally, the supporters of the never-ending ‘Game of Thrones’ are bound to lose all if they are throwing all their lot with Azmin.
The economic base of Azmin is in Selangor. Unlike the days of Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, the former menteri besar who built up the Selangor coffers, no one knows how much the state government still possesses.
For all that we know, Selangor may be taking on water, which explains why the Malaysian economy seems to be sputtering to a stop, as 25 percent of the GDP is from the state.
Malaysian politics cannot be completely dis-entangled from economics, which is why all sides want to be the top dogs in the government.
But if rabies has set in – manifested in wanting to take a big bite out of everyone, including the party president – then the signs are not healthy that they will be able to lead Malaysia.
Then, the blame of ruining the New Malaysia will be on these dogs of war.

Without stating the obvious but media is having a circus of the recent developments, the series of statements issues and media conference is very telling that PKR, which is the party with the most significant seats in Dewan Rakyat and DUNs, is sounding like a cranky cement mixer critically being pushed down a very dodgy and steep-angled amusement park ride.
PETALING JAYA: The turmoil in PKR over the past two days is a clear sign that the party is now in deep crisis from rival factions aligned to president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
Political analyst and Universiti Sains Malaysia social science lecturer Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said this could be seen from three recent incidents.
The first one took place on Thursday when 28 party leaders comprising PKR central committee members, MPs and state assemblymen signed a statement expressing their support for Azmin.
The 28, who include 15 MPs and eight state assemblymen, also told Anwar off for calling on Azmin to resign if it was proven that he was one of the two men in a viral sex video.
The second incident happened yesterday when six out of the 14 PKR state chiefs expressed their loyalty to Anwar.
The third development was a PKR leadership retreat held in Anwar’s parliamentary constituency of Port Dickson last night, where Azmin and many of his loyalists were absent.
“The retreat is supposed to be for all leaders. If only Anwar’s faction turned up, it shows that the crisis has widened.
“This feud involving a few leaders arguing via statements has degenerated into a fight that has affected a party programme. To me, this is a clear sign of a party in deep crisis,” said Prof Sivamurugan.
Universiti Malaya political analyst Dr Muhammad Asri Mohd Ali pointed out that PKR is the biggest party in the Pakatan Harapan coalition government with 50 MPs and 79 state assemblymen.
He noted that the problems in PKR are taking place as the transition of leadership from Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to Anwar, that has been agreed by Pakatan, is approaching.
“It’s clear that PKR is in crisis. With PKR being the main component in Pakatan, a failure to resolve or manage the rift in the party well could cause PKR’s problems to spread to Pakatan as well,” said Asri.
Now, what is interesting, is Gerontocracy Prime Minister’s unofficial mouth Dato A Kadir Jasin’s comment on the lame IGP Dato Abdul Hamid Bador’s statement about the ‘Semburit-Gate’ video, which suspiciously looks like the latter is trying to cover up and down play from the matter being hot and in perpetuation amongst the rakyat.
The Star story:
Kadir: IGP’s statement adds more mystery to scandal
Abdul Hamid on Thursday said the sex video was likely to be genuine, adding that there was an evil pact led by a leader of a political party to humiliate and damage the reputation of an individual.
In his blog, Kadir said that the matter was already affecting the Pakatan Harapan government.
“This individual is even willing to be jailed in defence of his allegation,” he added.
Kadir also said Abdul Hamid’s statements opened the door to a few possibilities, such as charging those who engaged in homosexual acts in the video and charging those who screened or circulated the obscene video.
“Those who feel they have been humiliated can (also) initiate civil action through a defamation suit,” he added.
He said Pakatan leaders should not wait until Malaysians grow tired of their behaviour and foreign investors lose confidence in the country.
Meanwhile, former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said Abdul Hamid should have maintained his professionalism and not make political statements.
“The IGP is a professional. He should not make judgments and talk about political conspiracies,” Zaid was quoted as saying by a news portal.
He added that the IGP should instead conduct a thorough investigation and present the evidence collected to the Attorney General.
“This is what the public is expecting from an impartial and professional team.
“We all love Azmin but we love the country more,” he added with a hint of sarcasm.
*************
It is popularly known IGP Hamid was picked by Gerontocracy Prime Minister for the ultimate purpose of the latter’s confidence with the former, on top of his over twenty years ‘speciality’ on Anwar and PKR when they were political enemies.
So many already slanting towards IGP Hamid’s lame statement on the investigation of a very high profile case, is a poor attempt for a cover up.
If it is an attempt for a poor cover up, then in the short term who would benefit from it.
Conveniently, PPBM would be having their EGM today. It is to amend the Constitution, a step before party election can take place.
It is believed that delegates to PPBM EGM today would ‘compromise’ the notion for the ‘Satu Ahli, Satu Undi’ (SASU), which would only be for branch and division levels but not higher posts.
What another interesting point to note is that since the ‘Semburit-Gate’ scandal is out, DAP has been completely silent except for this Ronnie Liu’s statement.
It is not totally off to take DAP is rock solid behind Anwar “Mat King Leather” Ibrahim and the quest for the latter to ascend the Premiership the soonest as it could happen.
Then again, Home Minister Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, who is the Police reports to, is also silent when it comes to ‘Semburit-Gate’.
One, the Home Minister’s own turf isn’t as rosy as it should be as the PPBM on his own home state is still roughly ‘unsettled’, which is affecting PPBM at Supreme Council leadership.
Two, the strong notion on the post Gerontocracy Prime Minister’s PH rule which many bought into the rumour that Muhyiddin would be Deputy to Prime Minister Anwar “Mat King Leather”.
The ‘Blame- Game’ strategy of sow of hatred by PH against BN is unequivocally and completely fail on this ‘Semburit Gate’.
This could the ‘trigger point’, which many is looking for, especially in either moving forward or reversal of situation.
The weekend where PKR is having its pow-wow on the President’s own turf and Gerontocracy Prime Minister had to come down and address them where as DAP already sounding out on the ‘Semburit-Gate’, UMNO President Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is camped in Kelantan.
Both sides are mending fences. One is keeping the sheeps in. The other, keeping the wolves together.
It’s suspiciously, that last night would be one day known as the ‘The Night of the Long Knives, Long Faces’.

The significant absent top PKR leaders from the party Pow-Wow in Port Dickson last night, specifically Deputy President Azmin Mohamed Ali and senior leaders aligned to him are now coming up with very lame excuses.

Zuraida, others explain PKR retreat absences, Tian Chua says no joint absence

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Top PKR leaders have given their reasons for not attending yesterday the first night of PKR’s three-day retreat in Port Dickson, while party vice-president Chua Tian Chang said there was no plan to be absent together.
Chua, who is better known as Tian Chua, reportedly said he will attend the retreat today after being absent last night.
“Some of us will attend partially — there is no concerted effort to not to attend the retreat,” he was quoted saying by local dailyThe Star, reportedly noting that party leaders had proposed the retreat three months ago to solve internal differences.
Amid tensions with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali was absent along with some other leaders at the Port Dickson retreat.
According toThe Star, PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin said others could make “insinuations” on why she did not attend, but said it was due to her having to be present at the World Firefighters’ Day event today at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur and having to fly to Surabaya, Indonesia on Sunday.
“I have other things to do. I have firefighting of a different kind,” she was quoted saying.
PKR Wanita chief Haniza Talha said she had sought to clear her schedule for the retreat but was unable to attend, noting that many programmes usually happen during the weekend and she had to settle things before leaving for Surabaya also on Sunday.
“The PKR retreat is not actually a retreat because all the branch leaders from all states will be present as well,” she was quoted saying.
Haniza who is a Selangor lawmaker will be going with Zuraida who is housing and local government minister to visit a public housing programme in Surabaya, The Star said.
Zuraida, Chua, Haniza were part of a list of 27 top PKR leaders ― including four vice-presidents and 19 central council members ― thathad signed a Thursday statement to publicly rebukeAnwar after he called on Azmin to resign if the veracity of the sex video in a scandal is established.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah ― who also signed the statement ― was having an official meeting in Indonesia last night,The Starsaid.
The paper reported that PKR Youth deputy chief Muhammad Hilman Idham ― who had also signed the public rebuke ― was not present as well last night at the retreat.

There is a Malay saying, ‘Cracks waiting to split’.
The idealism of Pakatan Harapan for a ‘Reformed Malaysia’ (Malaysia Baharu), is slowly and systematically slipping away from the clenched gullible hopefuls.
The most recent political manoeuvres and shifts even gotten those who propped Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s ability and sincerity to bring about ‘change’ to Malaysia in the lemon they sold to Malaysians the past two and half years of effective Pakatan Harapan-ship.
Malaysiakini story:
Mahathir must step down to save Reformasi
COMMENT | Our decision regarding PM’s imminent embrace of Umno defectors could determine nation’s fate for generations to come.
COMMENT | It should be plain by now that we are on the threshold of seeing the reincarnation of Umno through Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his party Bersatu.
Soon, the scores of Umno MPs will dwindle to a handful, with almost all the defecting MPs migrating to boost up the small number of Bersatu MPs, making the latter party one of the largest, if not the largest component party of the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition.
What’s wrong with stuffing up Bersatu with ex-Umno MPs that would increase Harapan’s total numbers?
There would be nothing seriously wrong with that actually, if Umno had not almost ruined the country with astronomical corruption, corroded the entire government administration, and fractured the country with unbridled racism and religious extremism – and if the country was not being led by a dubious reformist leader, Mahathir.
Mahathir has shown unmistakable signs that he is reverting to his previous mode of autocratic rule in the Umno era, during which he destroyed democratic institutions, enhanced racism and brought rampant corruption and cronyism, which system of governance later served as a foundation for former premier Najib Abdul Razak to launch his world-renowned massive kleptocratic frolics.
Mahathir is no reformist
That Mahathir is no reformist is evidenced from his refusal to abolish the myriad repressive laws and dismantle racist institutions, like the brainwashing set-up of the National Civics Bureau (BTN) as pledged before the last election.
His reluctance to bring in institutional reforms is also seen in his persistent refusal to disclose the reports of the Committee for Institutional Reforms and the Council of Eminent Persons. It is obvious that the revelation of those reports would have embarrassed him for his lack of action in the direction recommended in such reports.

This call came following the report about former Minister and UMNO Supreme Council member Dato Seri Hamzah Zainuddin’s statement of the agreement to defect after he and five other UMNO MPs proclaimed their severance from the nationalist party.
Hamzah: 36 BN MPs pledged support for Dr M
This includes those from Umno, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and MIC.
Larut MP Hamzah Zainuddin, who left Umno today, claimed that 36 BN MPs have signed a pledge of allegiance to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“There are 33 from Umno, one from Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and two from MIC who signed (letters of) support for the prime minister. This was not decided a day or two ago. It was decided about a month ago.
“This group sincerely want to ensure that the government (of the day) is stable and ensure that no one uses Parliament to dethrone the PM because we are hearing suggestions (of such).
“If the political situation is not stable, it would cause problems to the people. That is why we want stability and we support the PM to lead. This is all in the nation and the people’s interest,” he said, according to Berita Harian.
When asked if Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was aware of this development, Hamzah replied that the “boss” was unaware.

The fact is that, the Pakatan Harapan Government under Prime Minister Dr Mahathir’s Leadership have progressed very little into eighth month into power.
Only two out of the top ten ‘Change Agenda’ has been rolled out. Even that is in progress and have not achieved the success they promised to Malaysians.
One is the crucifixion of ‘UMNO Bogeyman’ ghastly stories, which currently the outrageous multiple criminal charges thrown against UMNO Leaders in the like of former Prime Minister Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, UMNO President Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Treasurer Dato’ Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor.
Former Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman is also on the hit list and expected more would be added.
This, on top of the last weekend’s massive converge of Malay-Muslim in a thunderous show of force which spooked the Non Malays, particularly PKR-DAP.
It is translated in DAP Emperorissimo Lim Kit Siang’s comment to the fate of the ‘Reform Agenda’ in the nothing-new ‘Malaysia Baru’.
The Malay Mail Online story:
Kit Siang: Malaysia Baharu won’t last without Malay support
Published10 hours agoon15 December 2018
By Yiswaree Palansamy
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) must strive to win over the Malay community to ensure the country’s revival since the general election is not erased, said DAP’s Lim Kit Siang.
In an interview withMalaysiakini, the Iskandar Puteri MP said the dominant community’s backing was crucial in order for the pact to remain in power and implement its intended visions and reforms.
There is a need for more Malays to come on board. This (the 25 to 30 per cent) was enough for May 9 — for a change but it is not enough for a revival.
“[…] We must be able to increase the Malay understanding (of the government) and their support. More Malays must take ownership (of the change),” he told the news portal.
However, he said that efforts to convince the Malay community to back PH must be balanced with preserving the backing of the country’s other communities.
Failing that, Lim predicted that the PH government would not be able to stay in power.
“The ‘New Malaysia’ will fail, and we can go back to pre-May 9,” he was quoted saying.
He warned of the spreading “toxic politics of hate and fear” and cited the rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination organised by PAS and Umno recently as an example.
While he said both parties were in decline, effort must still be made to counter their narrative.
Lim previously told Malaysians that true change will not be possible within a single term under PH, noting that the pact needed to undo over six decades of alleged abuse and corruption inflicted on the country by the previous government.
While PH managed an unforeseen victory in the general election, it did not do so with strong support from Malay voters.
Polls by think tanks such as Ilham Centre and Merdeka Center have placed Malay support for the coalition to be as low as in the region of 17 to 20 per cent.

Obviously the neighbourhood of quarter of million in demonstration of precision peaceful assembly, not to mention rubbish-free, send tremors through the spine of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir’s party PPBM.
As the supposed voice of the Malays in the Federal Government, there are not able to amass vectorially enough attention and support.
In short, their politics don’t resonate the sentiments and conviction of the Malay-Muslim majority.
Political analyst Joceline Tan’s most recent column:
The Islamic flavour, the sheer numbers and single-minded purpose of protesters at the anti-Icerd rally means that the government cannot afford to ignore what the Malays want.
A 93-YEAR-OLD driving through the streets of Kuala Lumpur does not sound like a good idea. But Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad showed that he still has a steady pair of hands as he drove into the city centre on Saturday.
According to a staunch supporter, Firdaus Abdullah, the Prime Minister wanted to see for himself the aftermath of the biggest Malay-Muslim protest in history.
Dr Mahathir is famous for scolding the Malays, be it for not remembering the past, for not working hard and, more recently, for not being more critical of corruption.
But he must have been pleasantly surprised to find that those at the mammoth anti-Icerd (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) rally that ended an hour or so earlier had done a fantastic clean-up job and left the streets even cleaner than before they descended on the city centre.
Many have described the rally as a “class act” – the protesters were disciplined and did not resort to rude sloganeering or uncivic behaviour as was the norm in past mega rallies.
It was conduct that even Dr Mahathir, known for his exacting ways, could not find fault with and it has also silenced many critics out there.
It is hard to guess what is going through his mind in the wake of the biggest challenge to his New Malaysia government.
A lesser man would have panicked, but Dr Mahathir has been rather sanguine in his response to the whole thing.
Besides, he could hardly blame the other side for what had happened because the Icerd issue was what KRA chief strategist Amir Fareed Rahim called an “own goal”, resulting from a total miscalculation on the part of Pakatan Harapan.
It was the golden opportunity for the Opposition to prove that the majority of Malays – two-thirds, to be exact – are not with the Pakatan government.
And prove it they did on Dec 8 when their supporters turned the streets of downtown Kuala Lumpur into rivers of human beings.
“Identity politics, especially of race and religion, still has a strong appeal in Malaysia. The two major Malay opposition parties have shown that they can unite over such issues and mobilise their support base,” said Amir.
It was a purely Malay-Muslim protest that set off alarm bells in the Mahathir administration.
The Prime Minister will be under pressure from now on to consider the Malay factor when making government policies.
“Many Malays feel they cannot rely on the government to defend their priorities on Islam and Malay rights. If this goes on, it will affect the credibility of the government,” said an aide to a Bersatu politician.
A common remark on social media was that this is a wake-up call for the powers-that-be.
At the peak of the rally, Yin Shao Loong, a policy officer to the Economic Affairs Minister, had tweeted in response to those belittling the rally: “Make all the snide asides you want about this being a rally for racism or a cover for crooks. This mobilisation is a wake-up call. PH needs to get out to the Malay heartland with people and policies that will have a transformative impact.”
The Pakatan government is too consumed by the blame game which they believe can carry them through to a second term in Putrajaya.
Some say it is unfair to expect so much so soon of the new government which is floundering in unchartered waters.
“People talk of a honeymoon period, but when you are the government, there is no honeymoon. People who put their trust in you expect you to deliver right away,” said the above Bersatu aide.
A more subtle signal coming from Saturday’s rally is the overwhelming numbers of young Malays, especially those in their 20s and 30s.
It means the Opposition has support from the Malay youth cohort.
In short, the Malays/Muslims will have the biggest say over the future of Malaysia.
“The Pakatan government needs to tread carefully on Malay issues. Its Malay support base is too narrow, it needs to put serious attention and effort to win the Malay hearts and minds,” said Amir.
There is little doubt the rally sent jitters through the Pakatan side even as their supporters tried to discredit it.
The concern was not only about the size, but the way the protesters moved with a single-minded purpose. The rally was sending out the message that when Malays are united, anything is possible.
Pakatan leaders know the danger of mega protests, be it the Arab Spring or what is now happening in the streets of Paris.
Their own support for the Bersih rallies chipped away at the then government’s hold on power.
“The government is not in any real danger. But it will be a bumpy ride ahead if issues like the economy are not properly addressed,” said election expert Datuk Prof Dr Redzuan Othman.
The government has resembled a chariot being pulled by horses running in different directions.
A couple of horses seem to be running on broken legs, and that is why Dr Mahathir may have to respond to the wake-up call by reshuffling his Cabinet, among other things.
He needs to fix his chariot soon and replace some horses, because by May 2019, he will reach the mid-point of his two-year tenure, or what is known as the lame-duck phase as Prime Minister.
Unless, of course, he plans on staying on indefinitely.
Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir has not able to deliver the ‘change’, though the propaganda is still harping on the ‘Malaysia Baru’ which has proven to be anything but lame and defective.
The common man of the street is already feeling the heat of the ‘change’ is heading down south.
Amongst many things, often Prime Minister Dr.Mahathir’s tendency to travel and working abroad is more prevalent than him spending time amongst the pockets of diverse Malaysian communities and interests.
Presently, he is on his second trip to Thailand in three months. His thrice visit to Japan in six months and failure visit to China, is still talked about.
Never mind the ‘Reform Agenda’. Basic statistics already worrying. Domestic economy, retail, tourism, oil and gas, foreign trade, foreign relations are already heading the other way, in rates digressing steeper than expected.
Federal Government investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd already lost RM65billion worth of market capitalisation as the the psychological market confidence factor in the translation of KLCI index dipped touching 1650 points on the bearish trend and exchange rate of USD to RM hit above 4.20 and on the uptrend.
Considering that the global price of oil and gas is on the bearish trend, the cost of production is actually going up. The latest news of Federal Government agreeing to the rise in electricity tariff would have pivotal effect across the board.
This is not what the majority of Malaysians signed on when they booted out Barisan Nasional from power on historical date of 9 May 2018.
Perhaps they have somewhat bought into the ‘UMNO Bogeyman’ hollow-win stories. However, the reality is that the biggest loser is the Malay-Muslim, which is the largest bit of Malaysian composition.
Inter-race relations is at its most precarious position since the May 1969 racial riots.
Anti-ICERD Rally Demonstrates The Malay-Chinese Divide
They came by car, train and buses from across the country in the tens of thousands, turning the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, into a sea of white last Saturday (Dec 8) to rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
Stirred by Islamist party PAS’ call that the rally was a “jihad” and former ruling party UMNO’s exhortation for “Muslim unity”, the protestors went ahead despite Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad announcing ICERD would not be ratified.
The huge turnout showed how race and religion became tools for the opposition to mobilise the masses against the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.
“I came here to defend Islam. We worry the government has merely delayed and not cancelled the ratification of ICERD,” said 51-year-old PAS member Surizan Sulaiman, who travelled by car from Kuantan, Pahang.
The opposition parties – UMNO and PAS – claimed ICERD threatened the position of Islam and the special rights of the Malays in the country.
ICERD USED BY UMNO’S ELITE TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM CORRUPTION CHARGES: ANALYSTS
Analysts suggested UMNO had seized on ICERD to divert attention away from the corruption allegations facing several of the party’s senior leaders.
Former prime minister and president of UMNO Najib Razak is currently facing 39 charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power. Several other senior members of UMNO have been charged in court.
“UMNO’s elites saw this ICERD as an amazing opportunity to divert attention from the corruption cases, court trials, by using a very powerful issue – the notion of what the nation is and the position of Malays,” said political scientist Chandra Muzaffar, president of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST).
PAS, on the other hand, saw an opportunity to boost its standing.
“PAS saw a huge opportunity to strengthen their political position. PAS does not have to grapple with corruption, for them it is mobilisation, something which they are very good at grassroots, to boost their standing,” added Chandra.
“The way it (ICERD) was presented to the Malays by the opposition …there was a lot of distortion, even downright lies. ICERD in no way threatens Islam, the monarchy, Malay rights,” said Chandra.
“ICERD allows for affirmative action … this means it does not threaten the special privileges of Malays,” he added.
ECONOMIC ISSUES CONTRIBUTED TO TURNOUT: ANALYST
Thrown into this mix was the unhappiness of those rural Malays – the fishermen, farmers, rubber tappers – who feel that they are being sidelined by the new government.
This cocktail of racial and religious brew inflamed passions that were on full display last Saturday, prompting analysts to warn it could potentially turn into a flashpoint if the situation is not managed well by all parties.
“It (ICERD) really hurts Malay sentiment. Don’t push us too hard. The word ‘amok’ comes from Malays. If Malays are very angry, they can become irrational. We don’t want that to happen. We want peace,” said Dr Mohd Khalid Kassim from PAS who stressed that he was speaking in his personal capacity.
“We must ensure ICERD is out indefinitely in Malaysia as it affects our religion and Bumiputra privileges,” he said.
Bumiputra, or sons of the soil, refers to Malays and indigenous people in Malaysia.
“I think the big turnout reflects the growing discontent amongst the Malay constituencies and signals PH to not take the rural voters for granted. Many fishermen, rubber tappers and Felda settlers feel that they are being sidelined by the new government,” said Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani, senior analyst at BowerGroupAsia.
Felda refers to the Federal Land Development Authority, a government agency which was founded in 1956 to develop land and handle the resettlement of rural poor into newly developed areas to organise smallholder farmers growing cash crops.
“While race and religion may have been the headline for this rally, cost of living, affordability of goods, opportunities for employment and affordable housing will be the deciding factor in the next election,” said Asrul.
NEW GOVERNMENT FACES BATTLE TO MAINTAIN SUPPORT AS FORMER REGIME PUSHES BACK
Equally significant, last weekend’s events were an example of the difficulties that are typically seen to plague new governments that oust long-running regimes.
In the case of Malaysia, Pakatan Harapan unseated UMNO which had ruled the country for 61 years, making it one of the longest-running regimes in the world.
“After many decades in power, the old regime forces have numerous supporters and stakeholders throughout bureaucratic, governmental, legal and community institutions with a great deal to lose,” said Professor Greg Barton, chair of Global Islamic Studies, Deakin University.
“Many resort to publicly supporting reform whilst covertly undermining it.
“Invariably, they (new government) face both open push-back, and more insidious attempts at covert meddling, from the ancient regime forces,” said Prof Barton.
“Whenever there are clashes or tensions along communal lines, that ostensibly appear to be racial or religious in nature, there are competing elite interests that are attempting to mobilise mass support by inflaming communal tensions,” he added.
Prof Barton pointed to Indonesia’s chaotic transition from an autocracy to a democracy in 1998 when sectarian violence erupted and claimed many lives as an example.
“This was very clear in Indonesia two decades ago under the reformist transitional presidencies of BJ Habibie and Abdurrahman Wahid,” said Prof Barton, who wrote a biography on Wahid.
ECONOMY, MERITOCRACY KEY TO PH SURVIVAL
‘I think the lesson learnt from the anti-ICERD rally is that the government should not move too quickly just to appease the vocal urban voters,” said Asrul of BowerGroupAsia.
“Such an entrenched mindset (on race and religion) must be tackled tactfully through engagement and education,” said Asrul.
Political scientist Chandra said the government could practise meritocracy in place of ratifying ICERD.
“You start by tending to the needs of people regardless of ethnicity, reward people on the basis of excellence and ability. Make those changes even if it’s gradual,” said Chandra.
“At the same time educate people, develop their understanding of society,” he said.
Asrul said there is a need for Pakatan to focus on the needs of the majority in order to retain support.
“PH government should focus on quick and easy wins that affect the majority to keep the momentum of winning the general election and defeating Najib Razak. Difficult issues such as ICERD should be tackled with a more long-term strategy in mind,” said Asrul.
“For Malaysia to transition through this difficult period of consolidating democratic reform, and to achieve its full potential, will require exceptional leadership from every quarter of Malaysian society,” said Prof Barton.

In many ways, UMNO as the nationalist party is the symbol of Malay-Muslim, which is the fundamental of mainstay Malaysian politics for over seven decades. UMNO managed to gel the Malay-Muslim support, which is clearly demonstrated even at the point of demise Barisan Nasional’s power, the party formed by Dato Onn Ja’afar and amalgamated and consolidated 29 Malay NGOs in May 1946 is evidence the unity that could be fostered when push comes to shove.
Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir’s PPBM is unable to match that. They maybe at the helm of power by the de facto of a very fragile marriage-of-(in)convenience-between-bakcstabbing-strange-bed-fellows, it is clear the party of former UMNO leaders is very thin on nationwide machinery and grassroots support.
Even in the Malay-Muslim majority constituencies.
The sentiments The fear on the projected path of for the Fifth and longest serving UMNO President (original and ‘UMNO Baru’) is his wrath for the damnation of the nationalist party, which was a member for almost the majority part of his seventy two years in politics.
The Malaysiakini story:
Mat Hassan: Kami rayu Dr M tak bubarkan Umno
Lu Wei Hoong (Dikemaskini)
The demise of UMNO as a nationalist party and spoils of of victory is probably Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir’s man-possessed scheme of things objective.
The manœuvres and shifts within UMNO are at leaders’ level and not the main body, which the grassroots. By cutting of the head and straggling resources and access to assets, is most likely to get UMNO imploded and the over three million ordinary members disorganised and unable to be mobilise for anything.
Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir’s obsession with his own political agenda and interest above the nation’s and at the expense of the aspirations of majority of Malaysians, is a mind-boggling master-stroke towards uncertainty, with mathematical permutation cannot be projected.
It is not surprising that his Machiavellian mind is strategising the ‘Divide and Rule’ and keeping the Malay-Muslim’s between UMNO and PAS wedged, as the two have more in common and working towards a new ‘Melayu Baru’.
In the absence of a proper succession plan and the agenda is have newly elected PKR President Dato’ Seri Anwar “Mat King Leather” Ibrahim despite the biggest share in the ruling Federal Constituency to not succeed as the Eighth Prime Minister.
The fear of de facto Eighth Prime Minister Anwar is apparent in his comment and tone upon getting his reaction of the massive exodus of UMNO MPs and leaders from Sabah and Semenanjung, which is about the diluting the power base of his own support.
This is not withstanding that the manoeuvres and shifts of MPs would create the imbalance of his own clout within Pakatan Harapan. It is mind boggling of Anwar’s influence of confidence and support from the valued Sabah and Sarawak combined 58 MPs, which is over 26%.
The other King Maker is the support of DAP. Combined with the centrally controlled party of 42 MPs, that is over 40% of the Dewan Rakyat. Then again, Anwar would have to come up with a very good offering to get DAP into his scheme, which is a possibility of having the first Non Malay Deputy Prime Minister formula.
A crystal-ball muddled, in so many clouded diversions rapidly flashing without any pattern.
It is a three-dimensional game of Risk and Chess, combined played by a very seasoned and strategically minded politician, whose productivity as a man still working full time as a Group Chief Executive of a very large firm of 1.6 million employees over the age nine three, itself is a medical miracle.
This is as the rest of Malaysia is fixated on the three-dimensional game of Master Mind, all and sundry.
One is reminded of the glaring comment of the son of Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir, who is also his party’s Deputy President and currently the Menteri Besar of Kedah, when the two were in the height of running down then UMNO President and Fifth President Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, “Nothing new”.
BN candidate for Batu Pahat Parliamentary seat Haliza Abdullah promised for the development that should have brought to the town but instead taken for other satellite towns.
“I will not promise you the sky but I would ensure that the development which should have been brought here but instead went to towns like Seri Gading and Parit Sulong”.
She spoke to the Chinese voters in a temple Jalan Jenjang, in own one of the oldest towns in Johor.
Apparently, she has been to a temple everyday to meet the Chinese voters since the XIV GE campaign started last Saturday.
She then on for three other venues.
Haliza is the Batu Pahat BN Wanita Chief and the first woman BN candidate for Batu Pahat.
