PM: Up to Gerakan to decide on Lee

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he would leave it to Gerakan to act against its former deputy secretary-general Lee Kah Choon, who has accepted a director’s post in the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and InvestPenang.

Gerakan, a component party in Barisan Nasional (BN), had been leading the Penang government up to the March 8 general election, when it fell into Pakatan Rakyat (PR) hands. “It is for the party to decide. It is up to Penang BN to do what they want. For me, it’s okay as long as there is no clash in policy,” he said at a brief press conference after attending a function in Kuala Lumpur today.

“Perhaps this opens ways for cooperation (between BN and PR).”

Abdullah, who is also BN chairperson, was commenting on Lee’s acceptance of the offer to join the two key investment development agencies in the Penang government.

Today, he flip-flopped, like expected and said “Ex-Deputy Secretary General Lee Kah Choon’s acceptance of investPenang Chairman’s post and PDC Director posts is against the spirit of BN”, as per quoted by The Star alert via sms.

It seemed PM ‘Flip-Flop’ Abdullah conveniently changed his mind again, most probably after consulting ‘Level Four’ outfit!

Gerakan CWC has decided to issue Lee, a former Parliamentary Secretary of the Health Ministry, a showcause letter for his accetance of both appointment by the DAP Government in Penang. Their worry for Lee’s under experience of industrial promotion was one of the reasons given.

Gerakan To Send Show-cause Letter To Kah Choon E-mail this news to a friend Printable version of this news

PENANG, April 22 (Bernama) — Gerakan has decided to send a show-cause letter to former party deputy secretary-general Datuk Lee Kah Choon on why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for his decision to accept two top posts in Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and its subsidiary, InvestPenang.

Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the decision was made at the party’s central working committee meeting Monday.

He said Kah Choon’s action contravened the principle and spirit of the party’s general directive.

“The party has previously instructed members to relinquish all appointments as municipal and district councillors and village development and security committee members in states under Pakatan Rakyat administration after the general election,” he said in a statement Tuesday.

On Sunday, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced the appointment of Kah Choon as PDC director and chairman of the executive committee of InvestPenang.

Koh said the instruction was based on the premise that Gerakan now had to play the role as an effective opposition.

“We can’t do this objectively if our own members hold key positions in the state and local administration,” he said.

The former Penang chief minister also questioned the political motive of Guan Eng in appointing Kah Choon knowing that he (Kah Choon) had no direct experience in promoting investments in the industrial sector.

“So far, he has experience as a lawyer and as parliamentary secretary to the Health Ministry, which are unrelated to the manufacturing industry,” he said.

The industrial sector, being Penang’s most important economic sector, was not proper for Kah Choon to play politics as this may jeopardise Penang’s efforts to effectively attract investments to Penang.
