Pencapaian A+ & penambahan ahli UMNO kerana bosan pembohongan PAS

Akhbar bahasa Cina Kwong Wah memberikan Mukhriz A+

Rekod membatasi Janji DiTepati telah dirakamkan. Calon Barisan Nasional bagi N04 Ayer Hitam Dato’ Paduka Mukhriz Mahathir diberikan pencapaian A+ oleh akhbar bahasa Cina Kwong Wah atas keberkesanan beliau menjadi Ahli Parlimen Jerlun sepanjang lima tahun perkhidmatan.

Pengundi Cina di Ayer Hitam puas hati prestasi Mukhriz, beri markah A+

Kini ‘angin perubahan’ menjadi tata-selera majoriti pengundi.

Spinning the wet yarn

Former IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan with Jen 9B) Tan Sri Md Hashim Hussein

Opposition Pact spin: Former IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan with Jen (B) Tan Sri Md Hashim Hussein

The desperation of the Opposition’s campaign moved into another stage when they spin on former IGP Tan Srì Musa Hassan’s appointment as ‘Adviser’ to Opposition Pact’s Security Advisory Council. Malaysiakini’s desperate attempt to spin:

Musa Hassan joins Pakatan advisory council

• Apr 29, 13 4:19PTG
Ex-police chief Musa Hassan has joined the Pakatan Rakyat security advisory council as an adviser, in light of recent incidents of political violence.

In a joint statement with Musa, former army chief General (Rtd) Hashim Hussein (left), who is the PKR candidate for the Johor Bahru parliamentary seat, said he had personally approached Musa to take up the position.

“As people who have spent a great part of our lives protecting and serving Malaysians to ensure peace and safety in our country, we wish to categorically state that political violence has no place in our democratic process,” the statement reads.

The council is to assist with a peaceful transition of power, should Pakatan form the federal government in the 13th general election, as well as to ensure an orderly campaign.

“We are alarmed that the home affairs minister publicly stated that these happenings would worsen more than a month ago,” the statement further reads.

The council will also advise Pakatan Rakyat on national security matters in the future.

The statement said that both Hashim and Musa have discussed about Pakatan’s aims to increase police salaries, along with improving the armed and police forces in the country as well.

Musa’s decision to join Pakatan could fuel more speculation about his political inclination.

Since retirement, Musa has been a vocal critic of Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (right), pointing out the latter’s interference in police matters.

He is also the patron for Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch), whose adviser S Gobi Krishnan is a PKR member.

****************

The truth is that Jen (B) Tan Sri Md Hashim Hussein called and asked to meet up Tan Sri Musa, for advice in the wake of recent security threats during this 13 GE like the bombing in Nibong Tebal and Molotov cocktail attacks.

“No, there was no appointment of me into any Security Advisory Council”.

Musa also admitted he did meet Jen Hashim with NGO MyWatch Chairman S Sanjeevan and was engaged into a discussion on various security matter. His advice is Pakatan Rakyat to be vigilant and report and work with the Police if any security matter arises.

“I am not into politics. Although I am invited to give talk on security matters. Like last night, I was in Wisma UMNO Jerlun”.

Lately, PKR did see an influx of disgruntled former service senior officers jumping into their political bandwagon like Jen. (B) Hashim who was the former Army Chief, former Deputy Army Chief Lt. Jen. (B) Dato’ Abdul Ghaffir and former Navy Logistic Chief First Admiral (B) Hj Imran. However, they are more number of PKR office bearers jumping out and abandoning the party, even in the middle of intense campaign.

The desperation of the Opposition Pact is getting more severe. First, many of their leaders are trapped by their own lies, drama and manipulation where the rakyat is getting more aware of them in the ‘Politics of Hatred’ strategy.

Now, as the 13GE campaign enters the second but more critical week the Opposition Pact leaders are becoming more vile in the attacks, like Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s prayer for Fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s death and Lim Kit Siang’s play into the racist game getting more intense.

Part of Lim Kit Siang’s speech in Taman Maju Johor Bahru on 27 April 2013 is all capital cities in Malaysia would be under DAP control.

Muhyiddin: BN nak ambil alih Kedah kerana PAS gagal

Timbalan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Hj Muhyiddin Mohd. Yassin

Timbalan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Hj Muhyiddin Mohd. Yassin berucap semasa melancarkan Pusat Sukan Jerlun, 23 April 2013

Timbalan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd. Yassin berucap semasa Majlis Pelancaran Pusat Sukan Jerlun. Turut hadir ialah calon BN bagi N04 Ayer Hitam Dato’ Paduka Mukhriz Mahathir, calon BN bagi P005 Jerlun Dato’ Osman Aziz dan calon BN bagi kerusi N03 Kota Siputeh dan Ketua Bahagian UMNO Jerlun Dato’ Abu Hassan Shariff.

“Kalau kita nak bagi markah, ‘E Minus’ saja  lah. Apa makna ‘E Minus’ itu? Gagallah!

Timbalan Pengerusi Perhubungan Bn Kedah Mukhriz Mahathir, Pengerusi Perhubungan BN Kedah Ahmad Bashah

“Mana dia ‘Membangun Bersama Islam’ mereka?

1 Undi PAS = 1 Undi DAP

1 Undi PAS IALAH 1 Undi DAP

Prinsip perjuangan PAS bukan mengenai Allah SWT.

ARKIB : 21/03/2013

1 undi Pas = 1 undi DAP

Puak ulama Pas beralih arah.

GELANG PATAH MENJADI SASARAN PILIHAN

Kini PAS menjadi agen anti-Melayu.

Drawing the battle lines

A Singaporean registered Hinda CRV campaigning for DAP

Johorean Malays are watching these moves: A Singaporean registered Honda CRV campaigning for DAP

Now that the battle lines in Gelang Patah Parliamentary constituency has been drawn, Johoreans particular the Chinese must make their stand. To continue the transformation process Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak has started and brought upon progress, especially within Iskandar Malaysia or face with stagnant growth.

Almost 50% of Prime Minister Najib’s ETP is within Iskandar Malaysia and Greater Johor Bahru. A lot of Federal Government strategic commercial initiatives are centred around Southern Johor and would be major catalyst for economic growth and downwards multiplier and trickle effect.

That  means on top of the specific projects outlined under the ETP, many of Malaysian Chinese controlled businesses such as Iskandar Waterfront Holdings, Dialog Group, Dijaya Corporation, Multipurpose Holdings and traditional business houses such as Tan Sri Robert Kuok’s which are based around Grreater Johor Bahru will get the direct and indirect benefits. They would benefit from the economic growth, expanded market, created demands and increased in commercial activities.

Gelang Patah

Imagine Menteri Besar Johor Dato’ Abdul Ghani Othman is defeated in Gelang Patah, what messages that the Johorean Chinese are sending to Prime Minister Najib?

1. Bottomline, they are more drawn to Emperorissmo ‘Middle Malaysia’ Lim Kit Siang’s racism Vs moving towards progress and a developed nation

2. Johorean Chinese defied the confidence by the Johorean Malays of great under standing, working together and tight co-operation and inadvertently gave up their privileged ‘power-sharing’ stature for a psychological ‘Chinese minority power’

3. The ‘Sino-nisation of Jauhar’ has been proven

4. The Chinese businesses and the entire value chain would be affected as Iskandar Malaysia is now an Opposition constituency and the drive to move in on the fast track node would no longer be stimulated and even taken a few frequency downwards

5. Testing the Johorean Malays as the majority for their patience, tolerance, acceptance and kindness to open their hearts to share power, wealth and the state

The likeliness of the Opposition to take over the Johor State Government is very slim. Imagine the outcome if Chinese Chauvinist Emperorisimo Lim wins at Gelang Patah; Would the Johor State Government officials and entire machinery be co-operative and efficient in any dealings by Chinese businesses, knowingly that the same business owners and employees were part in shaming their former Boss?

Emperissimo of ‘Middle Malaysia’ Lim Kit Siang

The fact is that, Lim never contributed in the economic growth and spurs and socio-development projects in areas he served either as MP or ADUN. He brought little or no benefits to the Chinese constituents be it culturally, heritage or education. All he did in the past 44 years of ‘Politics of Hatred’ strategy is to sow Chinese hatred against the Malays.

It is time to choose. It is time for the Johorean Chinese to prove their worthiness as a ‘power-share’ partner for the last 60 years.

How about Johoreans sue Kit for racism?

The ugly face and face of ugly

In his desperate attempt to win the imaginations of the Chinese voters for this last political run, Emperorissimo of ‘Middle Malaysia’ and Adviser to Chinese Chauvinist DAP Lim Kit Siang demanded that Fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to withdraw the latter’s blog posting of ‘Gelang Patah’ three days ago or risk being sued for “Writing falsehood”.

GELANG PATAH

1. Kit Siang is going to contest in Gelang Patah.2. Why Gelang Patah?3. Obviously it is because Gelang Patah has a Chinese majority.

4. Obviously Kit Siang is going to play on Chinese sentiments.5. Johore has been an Alliance/Barisan Nasional stronghold ever since independence. The three races there have been supporting each other in elections. They do not have strong racist feelings.

6. But Kit Siang is going to bring about conflict and antagonism between the races, to wage the Chinese to dislike and hate the Malays.

7. The slogan of the DAP is Malaysian Malaysia, a slogan used by the PAP in the 1964 General Elections. The slogan implies that Malaysia did not belong to all Malaysians equally. It belongs to the Malays.

8. The PAP intended to get the Chinese not to co-operate with the Malays, to end the Sino-Malay “ kongsi” of the Tunku in the Alliance Party.

9. Kongsi means not taking all our entitlements for ourselves but sacrificing some so others may get their share.

10. The PAP rejected this “kongsi” principle demanding that everything be based on merit. When Singapore left Malaysia the DAP, the PAP Trojan horse, took up the Malaysian Malaysia slogan. The intention was to draw away Chinese support from the MCA and abandon the kongsi concept with UMNO and the Malays. The meritocracy promoted by the DAP will mean diminishing opportunities for the Malays in education and in business. This will result in the Malays becoming less and less qualified and poorer. Meritocracy is not about sharing but about the winners taking all.

11. When Kit Siang decided to contest in Chinese majority Gelang Patah it is because he wanted the Chinese there and in Johor to reject working together and sharing with the Malays.

12. An unhealthy racial confrontation would replace Sino-Malay cooperation which has made Malaysia stable and prosperous. That cooperation will end when Kit Siang wins Gelang Patah. Even if there will not be violent clashes as seen in many countries where people are divided by race or religion, but confrontation between the three major races in Malaysia will be disruptive and will not be conducive to the development of Malaysia.

13. For this reason the decision of Kit Siang to contest in Gelang Patah will be the focus of the 13th General Election in this country.

14. Will the DAP end Malay-Chinese friendship and cooperation in Johor or will “kongsi” remain the bases of race relations in Johor and in Malaysia?

****************

The day before this demand was made, Emperissimo Lim called the Statesman “The greatest enemy of his own Bangsa Malaysia and Vision 2020”.

The fact is that, there is nothing ‘Malaysian’ about Lim and his bandit of Chinese Chauvinists. They are anti-Malaysia for the fact that they have incited and instigated provisions in the Federal Constitution such as Articles 153 and 11(4). He also time and again talked about having mobstreet-demonstration-turned-riot ‘Malaysian Spring’ as an avenue for the minority to assume power and control over the majority.

DAP in the past till present day is true and true a Chinese Chauvinist party. The clear demonstration is that in the 15 December 2012 Central Executive Committee election, not a single Malay was voted in.

Lim has been going around meeting the Chinese voters all over Southern Johor with his Chinese Chauvinist overtones. This is something that Johoreans are not used to. In fact, Johoreans for the longest time rejected Lim and DAP Chinese Chauvinism. After almost 40 democracy, only at the 12th Parliament saw the most number of DAP elected representatives in the State of Johor.

Johoreans without differentiating any ethnic groups have worked well together the past 150 years. When Father of Modern Johor Sultan Abu Bakar took over the throne, part of his modernisation of the state is to open up more lands for cultivation. He initiated policies and provided aids to ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs to stimulate the development of the state’s agricultural economy which was founded by Chinese migrants from Souther China in the 1840s.

Emperissimo of ‘Middle Malaysia’ Lim Kit Siang

Since then, Johorean Chinese have been allowed to develop themselves as well as the state, owning businesses, plantations and eventually large projects. Johorean Chinese have never had any issues with regards to their culture, heritage and religion all along and lived comfortably in the a state where Islamic education for primary kids are compulsory and almost all Johoreans are able to read and write in Jawi.

In fact Johor has the most number of Chinese schools in the country, at 214 Chinese schools and eight independent Chinese schools.

Johor is the perfect example of Barisan Nasional ‘kongsi-kuasa‘ (power sharing) concept where the majority of the Malays vote any of the candidates nominated by the national coalition party without any condition. The harmonious inter-racial relations in Johor had been so formidable that for eleven general elections, Non Malay BN candidates win with very strong margins.

Non Malay Politicians who were served as Excos of Johor State Government went on to bigger posts, as they progress. Examples are Dato’ Lim Si Cheng who assumed the post of Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat and Dato’ Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek who was appointed Minister of Health.

Gelang Patah

An example is in Gelang Patah Parliamentary constituency. Before Opposition’s ‘Politics of Hatred’ strategy, BN managed to poll almost 32,000 majority. It is a very good example how the Malays and Non Malays could decide, without any external instigation.

Lim by his own admission, together with PAP MP for Bangsar Devan Nair formed DAP in Malaysia. Lim also became the political secretary of Devan Nair.

Lim is now in Johor to do nothing but destabilise the political harmony and good understanding and relationship between all the races which have been formed for so long. His track records as an MP since 1969 is a demonstration that he practically did nothing for his constituents but play ‘Politics of Hatred’ as discolour politics.

Now that Emperissimo Lim is trying his luck in the state where he was born 72 years ago but never contested since his involvement in Chinese Chauvinist politics just after the 2nd general election in 1964, Johoreans should be aware that he is in no way giving up his ‘Politics of Hatred’ game. Probably the moment he brings over his Chinese Chauvinism as a candidate in Johor, Johoreans should condor suing him instead.

*Updated 2045hrs

In Pokok Sena, Kedah tonight, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said Johoreans are extra-ordinary people.

“In Johor, all the races work very well together. Malays worked hard to ensure the Non Malays win during elections and vice-versa. Now Lim Kit Siang is contesting in Johor to instigate the Chinese and sow hatred against the Malays”.

He also commented in the recent DAP CEC election, no Malay leaders are elected.

“They had one Malay chap, Tunku Aziz. He is a Kedahan. Now, he left and working hard to tell who these DAP people really are”.

Tun Dr. Mahathir: Apa hak mereka mengatakan UMNO kafir?

Apa hak mereka mengatakan kita kafir tanpa usul periksa?”.

“Dulu kata nak laksana ‘Hukum Hudud’.

Beliau terus menyerang pembohongan PAS sehingga bertujuan memesongkan orang Islam.

“Nik Aziz berkata masa Nabi Muhamad lahir, baginda belum jadi Rasulullah lagi sedangkan baginda diangkat menjadi Rasulullah pada umur 40 tahun. Kenapa menyambut kelahiran Nabi Muhamad?”

Tun Dr Mahathir mengesa agar orang Melayu perlu bijak memilih parti yang mana mampu membawa pembangunan kepada Islam.

“Kita adakan pilihanraya untuk pilih kerajaan. Apa yang PAS buat setelah mereka dipilih?”

Asserting territorial claims

President Xi Jinping at Sanya Naval Base, yesterday

People’s Republic of China President Xi Jinping visited a naval base in Hainan, South China. This is his first visit to a naval establishment since ascended into power and sending an important signal, especially to observers of regional geo-politics and military maneuvres.

Xi calls for strengthened navy

SANYA – Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the Navy to strengthen itself and integrate individual soldiers’ aspirations into national hopes of reinforcing the military.

Xi, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairmanof the Central Military Commission, visited the People’s Liberation Army Navy troops stationedin Sanya in south China’s island province of Hainan after attending the Boao Forum for AsiaAnnual Conference 2013.

Wearing a short-sleeved regular military uniform, Xi inspected a guard of honor of sailors and11 new-type naval warships of five categories representing the South China Sea Fleet.

The president also viewed the naval vessels of YueyangHengshui and Yulin, and salutedsoldiers to the song of the parade.

On board the Jinggangshan vessel and another new-type submarine, Xi carefully examinedweaponry features, inquired about soldiers’ training and daily life, accepted the vessel’s capand emblem presented by soldiers as a gift, and signed his name in Jinggangshan‘s log.

Jinggangshan is the first Chinese naval vessel to be manned, in part, by female personnel.Five of the 20 female soldiers currently working on board are ethnic Uygur from far WestChina’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

Xi praised the ethnic women soldiers, saying their integration is conducive to promotingwomen’s status and ethnic unity in China. He also encouraged sailors working in thesubmarine to better train themselves.

The president also examined the naval port’s infrastructures and had lunch with sailors in thedining hall.

“The spirit of thrift and perseverance should be better promoted and soldiers should be trainedto endure hardships, although military conditions have greatly improved,” he told sailors.

Particularly as naval troops are scattered so far and wide in their posts, they should strengthenthe building of CPC grassroots organizations and the training of Party cadres, Xi also urged.

This is subliminal strong signal on their readiness to assert their presence and eventually territorial claims on disputed areas in the South China Sea. China has been very consistent in flexing their muscles in islands, atolls and territorial waters closer to other nations, in their own claim.

The massive Chinese Navy expansion has been under close scrutiny by nation around the region.

Chinese Military Seeks to Extend Its Naval Power

YALONG BAY, China — The Chinese military is seeking to project naval power well beyond the Chinese coast, from the oil ports of the Middle East to the shipping lanes of the Pacific, where the United States Navy has long reigned as the dominant force, military officials and analysts say.

China calls the new strategy “far sea defense,” and the speed with which it is building long-range capabilities has surprised foreign military officials.

The strategy is a sharp break from the traditional, narrower doctrine of preparing for war over the self-governing island of Taiwan or defending the Chinese coast. Now, Chinese admirals say they want warships to escort commercial vessels that are crucial to the country’s economy, from as far as the Persian Gulf to the Strait of Malacca, in Southeast Asia, and to help secure Chinese interests in the resource-rich South and East China Seas.

In late March, two Chinese warships docked in Abu Dhabi, the first time the modern Chinese Navy made a port visit in the Middle East.

The overall plan reflects China’s growing sense of self-confidence and increasing willingness to assert its interests abroad. China’s naval ambitions are being felt, too, in recent muscle flexing with the United States: in March, Chinese officials told senior American officials privately that China would brook no foreign interference in its territorial issues in the South China Sea, said a senior American official involved in China policy.

The naval expansion will not make China a serious rival to American naval hegemony in the near future, and there are few indications that China has aggressive intentions toward the United States or other countries.

But China, now the world’s leading exporter and a giant buyer of oil and other natural resources, is also no longer content to trust the security of sea lanes to the Americans, and its definition of its own core interests has expanded along with its economic clout.

In late March, Adm. Robert F. Willard, the leader of the United States Pacific Command, said in Congressional testimony that recent Chinese military developments were “pretty dramatic.” China has tested long-range ballistic missiles that could be used against aircraft carriers, he said. After years of denials, Chinese officials have confirmed that they intend to deploy an aircraft carrier group within a few years.

China is also developing a sophisticated submarine fleet that could try to prevent foreign naval vessels from entering its strategic waters if a conflict erupted in the region, said Admiral Willard and military analysts.

“Of particular concern is that elements of China’s military modernization appear designed to challenge our freedom of action in the region,” the admiral said.

Yalong Bay, on the southern coast of Hainan island in the South China Sea, is the site of five-star beach resorts just west of a new underground submarine base. The base allows submarines to reach deep water within 20 minutes and roam the South China Sea, which has some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and areas rich in oil and natural gas that are the focus of territorial disputes between China and other Asian nations.

That has caused concern not only among American commanders, but also among officials in Southeast Asian nations, which have been quietly acquiring more submarines, missiles and other weapons. “Regional officials have been surprised,” said Huang Jing, a scholar of the Chinese military at the National University of Singapore. “We were in a blinded situation. We thought the Chinese military was 20 years behind us, but we suddenly realized China is catching up.”

China is also pressing the United States to heed its claims in the region. In March, Chinese officials told two visiting senior Obama administration officials, Jeffrey A. Bader andJames B. Steinberg, that China would not tolerate any interference in the South China Sea, now part of China’s “core interest” of sovereignty, said an American official involved in China policy. It was the first time the Chinese labeled the South China Sea a core interest, on par with Taiwan and Tibet, the official said.

Another element of the Chinese Navy’s new strategy is to extend its operational reach beyond the South China Sea and the Philippines to what is known as the “second island chain” — rocks and atolls out in the Pacific, the official said. That zone significantly overlaps the United States Navy’s area of supremacy.

Japan is anxious, too. Its defense minister, Toshimi Kitazawa, said in mid-April that two Chinese submarines and eight destroyers were spotted on April 10 heading between two Japanese islands en route to the Pacific, the first time such a large Chinese flotilla had been seen so close to Japan. When two Japanese destroyers began following the Chinese ships, a Chinese helicopter flew within 300 feet of one of the destroyers, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

Since December 2008, China has maintained three ships in the Gulf of Aden to contribute to international antipiracy patrols, the first deployment of the Chinese Navy beyond the Pacific. The mission allows China to improve its navy’s long-range capabilities, analysts say.

A 2009 Pentagon report estimated Chinese naval forces at 260 vessels, including 75 “principal combatants” — major warships — and more than 60 submarines. The report noted the building of an aircraft carrier, and said China “continues to show interest” in acquiring carrier-borne jet fighters from Russia. The United States Navy has 286 battle-force ships and 3,700 naval aircraft, though ship for ship the American Navy is considered qualitatively superior to the Chinese Navy.

The Pentagon does not classify China as an enemy force. But partly in reaction to China’s growth, the United States has recently transferred submarines from the Atlantic to the Pacific so that most of its nuclear-powered attack submarines are now in the Pacific, said Bernard D. Cole, a former American naval officer and a professor at the National War College in Washington.

The United States has also begun rotating three to four submarines on deployments out of Guam, reviving a practice that had ended with the cold war, Mr. Cole said.

American vessels now frequently survey the submarine base at Hainan island, and that activity leads to occasional friction with Chinese ships. A survey mission last year by an American naval ship, the Impeccable, resulted in what Pentagon officials said was harassment by Chinese fishing vessels; the Chinese government said it had the right to block surveillance in those waters because they are an “exclusive economic zone” of China.

The United States and China have clashing definitions of such zones, defined by a United Nations convention as waters within 200 nautical miles of a coast. The United States says international law allows a coastal country to retain only special commercial rights in the zones, while China contends the country can control virtually any activity within them.

Military leaders here maintain that the Chinese Navy is purely a self-defense force. But the definition of self-defense has expanded to encompass broad maritime and economic interests, two Chinese admirals contended in March.

“With our naval strategy changing now, we are going from coastal defense to far sea defense,” Rear Adm. Zhang Huachen, deputy commander of the East Sea Fleet, said in an interview with Xinhua, the state news agency.

“With the expansion of the country’s economic interests, the navy wants to better protect the country’s transportation routes and the safety of our major sea lanes,” he added. “In order to achieve this, the Chinese Navy needs to develop along the lines of bigger vessels and with more comprehensive capabilities.”

The navy gets more than one-third of the overall Chinese military budget, “reflecting the priority Beijing currently places on the navy as an instrument of national security,” Mr. Cole said. China’s official military budget for 2010 is $78 billion, but the Pentagon says China spends much more than that amount. Last year, the Pentagon estimated total Chinese military spending at $105 billion to $150 billion, still much less than what the United States spends on defense. For comparison, the Obama administration proposed $548.9 billion as the Pentagon’s base operating budget for next year.

The Chinese Navy’s most impressive growth has been in its submarine fleet, said Mr. Huang, the scholar in Singapore. It recently built at least two Jin-class submarines, the first regularly active ones in the fleet with ballistic missile capabilities, and two more are under construction. Two Shang-class nuclear-powered attack submarines recently entered service.

Countries in the region have responded with their own acquisitions, said Carlyle A. Thayer, a professor at the Australian Defense Force Academy. In December, Vietnam signed an arms deal with Russia that included six Kilo-class submarines, which would give Vietnam the most formidable submarine fleet in Southeast Asia. Last year, Malaysia took delivery of its first submarine, one of two ordered from France, and Singapore began operating one of two Archer-class submarines bought from Sweden.

Last fall, during a speech in WashingtonLee Kuan Yew, the former Singaporean leader, reflected widespread anxieties when he noted China’s naval rise and urged the United States to maintain its regional presence. “U.S. core interest requires that it remains the superior power on the Pacific,” he said. “To give up this position would diminish America’s role throughout the world.”

Thom Shanker contributed reporting from Washington.

South China Sea is believed to have vast deposits of crude oil and natural gas, which are fuel desperately needed for China to energise their nation of 1.3 billion people.

Three weeks ago, a flotilla of four Chinese warships which include the amphibious landing platform Jianggang asserted themselves in atolls 80km of the coast of Sarawak. In the past, China has asserted itself by the use of naval forces in South China Sea islands such as Paracelles (territory previously administered by Vietnam) and Scarborough Shoals, which are part of the Philippines.
